Illegal Betting and Stock Market Racket in Ahmedabad
Illegal betting and stock market manipulation have come to light through the actions of a Rapido driver, who reportedly earns between ₹10,000 and ₹12,000 monthly. This individual has become embroiled in a shocking ₹550 crore racket in Ahmedabad, according to recent press coverage.
Discovery of Financial Misconduct
The case gained attention when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) identified discrepancies in a bank account belonging to Pradeep Ode, a man with relatively low earnings. Over ₹300 crore was traced through his account, sparking suspicions of its involvement in a much larger financial crime operation.
Transactions and Suspicion
The rapid movement of funds raised red flags, leading investigators to scrutinise possible connections with illegal online cricket betting and manipulation in the stock market. The funds appeared to be transferred through hawala channels and linked to fraudulent bank transactions. What initially seemed like an ordinary savings account is believed by investigators to be a crucial component of an organised financial syndicate.
Admission and Revelations
When questioned, Ode revealed that he had rented his bank account to a person named Kiran Parmar for ₹25,000. Officials noted that he received ₹400 for each cheque signed on behalf of Parmar.
Creation of Shell Companies
Using Ode’s identity, a company known as Pradeep Enterprise was created. Further investigation revealed two additional shell companies—Kamlesh Trading and Raunak Traders—were registered in 2024 with no legitimate business operations. However, their bank accounts were filled with intriguing and extensive transactions.
Scale of Transactions
In total, transactions exceeding ₹550 crore were registered across these companies. The ED highlighted substantial sums of ₹80.50 crore, ₹52.11 crore, and ₹22.86 crore transferred to three separate entities under investigation.
Allegations of Money Laundering
Officials allege that these accounts were leveraged to channel profits from online cricket betting. The investigation also unveiled indications of circular trading in stock market transactions, a strategy typically employed to artificially ramp up trading volumes and manipulate stock prices. Additionally, concerns arose over penny stock trades and dubious contributions via Impact Guru, pointing to various financial mechanisms allegedly exploited for money laundering.
Broader Investigations in Progress
The inquiry has expanded beyond Ode, with investigators looking into the financial activities of a businessman based in Gandhidham, including substantial wedding expenses and other significant outflows. Moreover, it was discovered that the bank information utilized for registering companies was associated with Sheikh Moin Mohammad Shafi, indicating the suspected use of multiple identities to execute the scheme.
Ongoing Tracking of Illicit Funds
The ED continues to follow the trail of funds and identify additional beneficiaries of this extensive operation. Authorities have implied that more arrests and asset seizures may occur as the investigation progresses.
