Zomato Faces Backlash Over Sudden Employee Layoffs
Social media platforms recently saw users on Reddit reporting that Zomato has terminated the employment of over 300 staff members without prior notification or warning. In a particular post, a user recounted their dismissal from the company over what they perceived as an absurd and unjust reason, receiving no prior warning or chance to make improvements.
“hired for their dedication and results, employees were shocked to find themselves dismissed due to being late on average by 28 minutes over the last three months. There was no warning or opportunity for improvement—just an abrupt termination despite maintaining excellent performance metrics, a solid track record, and a notable presence in the workplace,” the user shared.
The individual went on to assert that more than 300 individuals shared similar experiences, declaring Zomato’s unwillingness to provide opportunities for improvement. “The company disregarded the effort put forth, the results achieved, and the commitment shown. Just like that, they terminated hundreds of jobs without a second thought,” they expressed.
BusinessToday. In has reached out to Zomato for a comment on the matter, promising to update the story as more information becomes available.
Additionally, the user cautioned others against working for Zomato, alleging that the company treats its workforce as disposable, regardless of individual contributions. “For those currently employed at Zomato or considering joining, it’s advisable to remain cautious; your hard work holds little value when they decide to reduce their workforce.”
Another Reddit user echoed similar sentiments, stating that the company allegedly dismissed over 500 employees without any caution or accountability.
“Zomato assured us of career advancement—promotions, salary increases, and stability. We exerted extra effort, worked extended hours, and placed our trust in the business. Then, all of a sudden, they let go of over 500 employees. No prior warning or accountability. Just a chilling statement that ‘We never promised anything.'”
Furthermore, the individual mentioned that this pattern is not unique to Zomato but rather endemic across many corporate offices. “They hype employees with grand ambitions, extract the utmost effort, and then replace them like disposable components. A new group arrives, fed the same false promises, and the cycle repeats.”
In recent developments, Zomato has reportedly laid off up to 600 customer support workers within a year of recruitment. This action comes as a reaction to a slowdown in growth in its primary food delivery operations and rising losses in its subsidiary, Blinkit. To lower expenses, Zomato is introducing artificial intelligence to streamline customer support procedures, as outlined in a LiveMint report.
