Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the visionary behind India’s transformative economic reforms, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. The announcement of his death was made by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, where he was rushed to the emergency department at approximately 8.30 PM in a critical state.
Health Complications and Final Moments
According to an AIIMS bulletin, Singh had been receiving treatment for age-related health issues and experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. The bulletin detailed:
- Immediate resuscitative measures were initiated at his residence.
- He arrived at AIIMS Delhi’s medical emergency unit at 8.06 PM.
- Despite the medical team’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived and was declared deceased at 9.51 PM on 26th December, 2024
Political Legacy
Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister for two terms from 2004 to 2014 under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. During recent months, he had faced significant health challenges.
He is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and their three daughters.
Previously, Singh held the position of Finance Minister under Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao and was a pivotal figure in the 1991 economic reforms. These reforms not only steered India away from potential bankruptcy but also marked the beginning of a dynamic era of economic liberalisation, fundamentally reshaping India’s economic landscape.
