Emerging Technologies and Their Impact on Future Job Markets

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, advanced energy systems, and sensor networks are poised to transform global labour markets, according to a recent report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) titled Jobs of Tomorrow: Technology and the Future of the World’s Largest Workforces.

Influence on Key Sectors

The report underscores that these technologies will profoundly affect seven critical sectors that together employ nearly 80% of the world’s workforce: agriculture, manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail trade, transport and logistics, business and management, and healthcare.

Strategic Decisions for Transformative Technology

Till Leopold, Head of Work, Wages and Job Creation at the World Economic Forum, emphasised that the trajectory of technological advancement will be shaped by decisions made now and in the immediate future. Recognising which technologies will be transformative and their implications on job categories is vital for fostering beneficial outcomes.

Revolutionising Hands-on Sectors

While much of the global conversation surrounding automation has concentrated on office jobs, the report reveals that frontier technologies are also modernising practical sectors. For example, drones are being employed in agricultural harvesting and medical deliveries to rural areas. Furthermore, rooftop renewable energy systems in Africa are enhancing energy access for frontline workers. In the construction sector, semi-automated machinery is alleviating physical burdens and enhancing safety. In healthcare, robotics and AI are aiding in the reconfiguration of patient care and improving workforce efficiency.

Investment and Accessibility

The report advocates for strategic investments, particularly in developing markets, to guarantee that these technologies are inclusive and reachable. It points out that both agriculture and healthcare require improved technology dissemination, while manufacturing methodologies should be crafted to suit local industrial capabilities. The retail and logistics sectors, according to the report, will gain from digital platforms that enhance efficiency without leading to monopolistic practices.

Amplifying Human Potential

Neeti Shukla, Co-Chair of the Global Future Council on Jobs and Frontier Technology and Co-Founder of Automation Anywhere, stated that these technologies have vast potential to enhance human capabilities.

Collaborative Efforts for Future Progress

The World Economic Forum urges employers, governments, and technology developers to work together in facilitating technology investment, bolstering market structures, and aligning workforce objectives. The Council intends to continue its efforts through 2026 to identify actionable strategies for ensuring that technology generates inclusive, high-productivity jobs on a global scale.
