Mahesh Babu Joins Forces with Indian Studio Shortgun Games
ADVERTISEMENT

Mahesh Babu has stepped into a new arena, and this time there’s no camera involved. The Indian cinema superstar has joined Mumbai-based Shortgun Games as a strategic investor, the studio announced on November 3, 2026.

What makes this more than a celebrity-backs-startup story is the kind of studio he has picked. Here’s a closer look.

Highlights

  • 1. Why the Mahesh Babu Shortgun Games investment is not another mobile story
  • 2. Project Takedown is the centrepiece
  • 3. Film-style fight design for a game
  • 4. What they said
  • 5. The bigger pitch
  • 6. About Shortgun Games

Why the Mahesh Babu Shortgun Games investment is not another mobile story

India’s digital entertainment scene has mostly revolved around mobile. Shortgun’s co-founders, Jeet Chandan and Vidhit Mehta, chose early and deliberately to go a different way. The studio builds only for PC and modern consoles, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Their stated mission is to show that an Indian studio can create high-fidelity worlds, deep gameplay loops and cinematic experiences that meet the expectations of core gamers anywhere. With Babu on board, the three are forming what the company calls a high-impact creative alliance, aimed at building original, franchise-grade IPs for these platforms. The company frames it as cinema’s storytelling pedigree meeting next-generation interactive technology.

Project Takedown is the centrepiece

The flagship of the Mahesh Babu Shortgun Games partnership is Project Takedown, a high-budget, narrative-driven action-adventure. According to the company, it is built to compete directly on the global stage, across North America, Europe, the UK and other international markets.

The pipeline is not a single-game story either. Shortgun is also working on Roll ’em Out, a cooperative indie title.

Film-style fight design for a game

For combat, the studio says it has brought on action director Vicky Arora, whose film credits include URI: The Surgical Strike, RRR and Tanaav, to lead action design. As per the company, his team has overseen motion-capture choreography, combat pre-visualisation and physical stunt mechanics.

The studio adds that live stunt engineering is fed directly into its digital character pipeline. Its claim is that this yields high-impact combat rarely attempted outside tier-one global publishing houses. That is the company’s own description, and we will only know how it plays once the game is out.

What they said

Announcing the Mahesh Babu Shortgun Games partnership, Babu described interactive entertainment as the frontier where narrative depth, cutting-edge technology and global culture meet. He said India has extraordinary creative potential, and that the time is right to build original characters and cinematic worlds that resonate across the globe.

What drew him to Shortgun, he said, was the founders’ clarity of ambition and their drive to create high-end PC and console experiences that stand shoulder to shoulder with international studio benchmarks. He called backing young, visionary creators with a defined technological roadmap deeply inspiring, and said he looks forward to supporting the shared vision for Project Takedown.

Mehta, co-founder and director, said the studio was founded to prove that India can engineer world-class interactive entertainment for PC and modern consoles. He called Babu’s entry as a strategic investor an extraordinary milestone, and said the actor’s understanding of large-scale storytelling, emotional connection and mass resonance elevates the vision for Project Takedown.

Chandan, also co-founder and director, said the goal has always been to build durable, cross-media franchises that go beyond regional boundaries. He described Babu’s trust in the roadmap as a massive vote of confidence for the team, and said the actor’s involvement will help the studio scale its technical capabilities, expand its creative talent and execute at uncompromising quality standards.

The bigger pitch

Through the Mahesh Babu Shortgun Games partnership, Shortgun says it is positioned at the vanguard of a new era in Indian media, one that turns domestic storytelling into premium, console-grade universes for a global audience.

About Shortgun Games

Shortgun Games is a Mumbai-based development studio focused exclusively on premium interactive experiences for PC and console ecosystems. Its pipeline runs from cinematic adventure (Project Takedown) to cooperative indie play (Roll ’em Out).
