The wave of layoffs in the technology sector persisted into 2024. After significant job reductions in 2022 and 2023, the year 2024 witnessed over 150,000 positions eliminated across 542 companies, based on data from the independent layoffs tracker Layoffs.fyi. Major players such as Tesla, Amazon, Google, TikTok, Snap, and Microsoft executed substantial layoffs in 2024, alongside numerous smaller startups that also experienced staff reductions, with some even ceasing operations altogether.

We will continue monitoring industry layoffs into 2025, providing insights into the ongoing trend of cutbacks. By later this year, we aim to present separate lists for 2024 and 2025, making it easier to identify patterns.

Tracking these layoffs helps us evaluate the impact on innovation within both large corporations and smaller enterprises. Additionally, it sheds light on the probable effects of embracing AI and automation in roles previously thought secure. This situation highlights the human consequences of layoffs and the potential innovation that could arise from these changes.

SolarEdge Technologies

The company is set to lay off 400 global employees. This marks the fourth round of layoffs since January 2024, reflecting a downturn in the solar industry.

Level

The fintech startup founded in 2018 suddenly closed operations earlier this year. According to CEO Paul Aaron, the closure followed an unsuccessful acquisition attempt, although Employer.com is now considering a new offer to purchase the company post-closure.

December 2024

Brave Care

The company has permanently ceased operations, as stated on its website. It remains unclear how many employees were affected.

Epicery

This food delivery startup has stopped operations due to “economic and financial challenges” that proved insurmountable.

Bench

The company shut down abruptly but was subsequently acquired by Employer.com for an undisclosed amount. It is currently unknown how many of the 600 staff will be rehired.

Lilium

The company ceased operations, resulting in layoffs of around 1,000 employees. However, there may be a chance for revival, as Lilium announced that investors had agreed to acquire two subsidiaries, enabling a potential restructuring and exit from insolvency.

Boston Dynamics

The company has laid off 45 employees, which constitutes 5% of its total workforce. A representative confirmed to The Boston Globe that the layoffs affected “nearly every area of the business.”

OfferUp

This company is reducing 22% of its staff as part of its expansion strategy into new product categories. The exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed.

Canoo

The firm is initiating another round of layoffs shortly after relocating employees to Texas to avert bankruptcy. More than 20 employees have been included in this round.

November 2024

AlphaSense

Has terminated 150 positions, removing 8% from its total workforce as part of a restructuring following its acquisition of Tegus in July 2024.

Ola Electric

Is reportedly letting go of up to 500 employees in a move aimed at enhancing its profitability, impacting more than 10% of its total workforce.

Hopper

Has cut approximately 10% of its employees, affecting around 60-65 positions, as the online travel agency undergoes another reorganisation.

LinkedIn

Has reduced its workforce by 202 employees, which is about 1% of its overall staff. The layoffs primarily impacted roles within engineering and customer support, as confirmed by spokesperson Greg Snapper.

Headspace

Is reducing its workforce by 13% and plans to transition its clinical therapists to part-time or contract positions to “reset” the organisation. The exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed.

Truelayer

Has reportedly let go of roughly a quarter of its team. Sources indicated to City AM that 71 positions were eliminated before the announcement of a $50 million funding round.

AppLovin

Disclosed 120 job cuts in a recent WARN filing. This notice came shortly after the advertising software firm achieved a $97.7 billion valuation.

Stoa

Has ceased its operations after four years in the market, as confirmed by CEO Raj Kunkolienkar on LinkedIn.

AMD

Is in the process of laying off 4% of its workforce to

focus on “extensive growth opportunities.” AMD had approximately 26,000 employees last year, meaning the layoffs could affect around 1,000 workers.

23andMe

Is reducing its workforce by 40%, impacting more than 200 employees, as part of a corporate restructuring initiative. Following its public listing in 2021, 23andMe has experienced a decline of over 99% in its market value due to waning interest in its products and subscriptions, alongside a data breach in 2023 where 7 million users’ ancestry information was compromised.

Chegg

Is letting go of 319 employees, which constitutes 21% of its total workforce, as it finds it challenging to compete with ChatGPT and various other AI services. Like 23andMe, Chegg has also seen a 99% drop in its value since its 2013 public offering.

Enphase Energy

Is laying off approximately 500 employees, which is about 17% of the company’s total workforce in the solar and electric vehicle charging sector. This marks the second reduction in less than a year for Enphase, as they continue to navigate significant challenges facing the solar industry.

Exosonic

Is ceasing operations after five years in business. The supersonic aircraft startup became a part of Y Combinator’s Winter cohort in 2020 and successfully raised over $4.5 million.

Freshworks

Is laying off 660 employees globally, which represents 13% of the total staff, as the software-as-a-service company in customer and IT service management completes a restructuring process by year-end.

The Mozilla Foundation

Has reduced 30% of its workforce, attributing the layoffs to a “continuous wave of change.” This marks the second round of job cuts for Mozilla this year.

Maven Clinic

Reportedly reduced 10% of its staff, affecting roughly 60 employees. In October 2024, they announced a significant $125 million Series F funding.

Jellysmack

CapWay

Has ceased operations, as founder Sheena Allen announced on LinkedIn. The fintech, backed by Y Combinator, aimed to deliver financial services to underserved communities in banking deserts.

Meta

Has implemented staffing reductions across various teams as the company aims to “align resources with long-term strategic objectives,” according to a statement sent to StartupSuperb. The breadth and specific teams affected remain undisclosed; however, it has been confirmed that Threads, recruiting, and legal teams are not exempt from these changes.

Boeing

Plans to reduce 10% of its workforce, which will affect approximately 17,000 employees. This decision follows a loss of $9.97 per share in Q3 alongside a prolonged machinist union strike.

Stellantis

Is set to lay off 1,100 workers in Michigan, impacting its subsidiary brands including Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, and Dodge.

TikTok

Is reducing its workforce by hundreds of employees, primarily in Malaysia, as the social media platform shifts towards AI for content moderation. The company reported that fewer than 500 staff members are affected.

Samsung

Is eliminating positions in Southeast Asia and Australia to “enhance operational efficiency.” A spokesperson informed StartupSuperb that there is no “target number for specific roles” yet, though reductions could impact around 10% of the workforce in these regions.

Kaspersky

Is closing its UK office and laying off numerous employees, as reported by StartupSuperb. This decision follows the recent shutdown of its U.S. operations just three months prior.

NFX

Laid off four employees as the company seeks to “rebalance” its resources, shifting focus from its software and product teams to its investment team, according to general partner Pete Flint’s communication with StartupSuperb.

Eaze

Is dismissing 500 employees as it begins to wind down its operations. In a message to employees, CEO Cory Azzalino noted the “persistent challenges within the California cannabis market” as a key reason for the closure.

PubMatic

Has laid off approximately 1% of its total workforce, which equates to over a dozen employees, as it shifts its business focus towards connected TV advertising.

Salesforce

Reports indicate that Salesforce is planning to lay off 700 employees, or about 1% of its workforce. This follows a major workforce reduction of 10% implemented in 2023.

Flexport

Flexport is said to be preparing to cut approximately 20% of its workforce in the coming weeks. This follows similar reductions made in October when founder Ryan Petersen resumed the role of CEO and cut 20% of staff.

Microsoft

Microsoft will lay off 1,900 employees across its gaming divisions following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has also announced his departure.

Swiggy

The food delivery service Swiggy is reducing its workforce by about 400 jobs, which represents 7% of its employees, to enhance its financial stability in anticipation of a planned IPO later this year.

Aurora

Aurora has reportedly laid off several employees. According to insiders, around 3% of its workforce has been affected.

eBay

eBay is set to lay off 9% of its personnel, impacting approximately 1,000 full-time employees. According to a company blog post, there are also plans to reduce contract roles in the near future.

SAP

SAP has announced plans to provide voluntary buyouts or job changes to 8,000 employees as part of its restructuring efforts.

Brex

Brex has laid off 20% of its staff, impacting 282 workers. Co-CEO Pedro Franceschi noted in a blog post that the company is prioritising “long-term thinking and ownership over short-term gains in our comp structure.”

TikTok

TikTok has eliminated approximately 60 positions across the U.S., affecting teams in Los Angeles, New York, and Austin, as well as additional layoffs in international locations. NPR’s initial reporting suggests that the majority of affected roles are within sales and advertising.

Vroom

Vroom is reducing its workforce by 90% as it closes its online used car marketplace, reallocating resources towards two specific business units: one focused on auto financing and another on AI-powered analytics.

Riot Games

Riot Games is laying off 11% of its workforce, impacting approximately 530 employees. This change reflects the company’s focus on “fewer, high-impact projects” and the discontinuation of its five-year-old publishing group, Riot Forge.

Wayfair

Wayfair is cutting 13% of its global workforce, resulting in layoffs affecting 1,650 employees, as part of a restructuring strategy to eliminate excess management layers.

YouTube

YouTube confirmed it will lay off 100 employees as part of a restructuring initiative affecting its creator management and operations teams.

Google

Google is undertaking a layoff of “hundreds” of employees within its advertising sales team, according to information from a leaked memo. These job cuts follow previous significant layoffs in its hardware divisions, with more expected throughout the year, as communicated by CEO Sundar Pichai in a memo obtained by the Verge.

Lost Boys Interactive

Reports indicate that Lost Boys Interactive has laid off a substantial number of employees in January.

The game development studio was acquired by Gearbox, the creators of Borderlands, in 2022.

Pixar

Pixar is set to lay off employees in 2024, as discovered exclusively by StartupSuperb. The layoffs could affect up to 20% of the animation studio’s workforce of 1,300 individuals. This decision comes as Disney aims to cut back on the studio’s output while striving to reach profitability in the streaming sector.

Audible

Discord

Discord is set to lay off 17% of its workforce, which translates to around 170 employees. In an internal memo acquired by the Verge, Discord’s CEO, Jason Citron, attributed these layoffs to the company’s rapid growth.

Google

Google has let go of hundreds of employees from its Google Assistant division, alongside teams managing Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit hardware. The company confirmed to StartupSuperb that James Park and Eric Friedman, co-founders of Fitbit, are also departing.

Amazon

Amazon is laying off “several hundreds” of employees working at Prime Video and MGM Studios, as stated in a memo sourced by StartupSuperb. This announcement follows the recent layoffs of 500 employees at Amazon’s Twitch platform.

Twitch

Twitch is reportedly reducing its staff by 500 positions, which accounts for 35% of its workforce, amid ongoing challenges in achieving profitability due to increasing costs and community feedback. These layoffs come following additional layoffs that occurred in 2023.

Treasure Financial

Treasure Financial confirmed to TechCrunch that layoffs conducted in December affected 14 employees, which represents 60% to 70% of the company’s total workforce, according to various sources.

Duolingo

Duolingo reported a reduction of 10% of its contractor workforce at the end of 2023, as the company shifts towards AI-driven solutions for content production and translations that were previously managed by human employees.

Rent the Runway

Rent the Runway announced plans to eliminate approximately 10% of its corporate roles in response to a restructuring plan necessitated by Anushka Salinas’ forthcoming resignation as the operating chief and president at the end of January.

Unity

Unity is reducing its workforce by around 25%, which equates to 1,800 employees. The video game engine developer has undergone three rounds of layoffs within 2023.

NuScale

NuScale announced on January 8 that it is laying off approximately 28% of its workforce, which amounts to 154 employees, as the small modular nuclear reactor company refocuses on “key strategic areas.”

Trigo

Trigo is reportedly laying off 15% of its workforce, which is dedicated to computer vision solutions for the retail sector.

InVision

InVision is set to shut down at the conclusion of 2024, after 12 years of operation. The design collaboration startup was formerly valued at nearly $2 billion.

VideoAmp

VideoAmp is implementing layoffs affecting close to 20% of its workforce as it strives to compete with Nielsen in the media measurement sector. CEO Ross McCray has stepped down from the company.

Orca Security

Orca Security is laying off approximately 15% of its staff, equating to 60 employees. The Israel-based company plans to transfer some affected employees into other roles within the organisation.

Frontdesk

Frontdesk has dismissed its entire 200-person workforce on January 2, following unsuccessful attempts to secure additional funding, as reported exclusively by StartupSuperb. This mass layoff occurred just seven months after the startup acquired rival Zencity.
