The wave of job cuts within the technology sector persisted into 2024. Following substantial workforce reductions in the years 2022 and 2023, 2024 witnessed over 150,000 layoffs across 542 companies, as detailed by the independent layoffs tracker Layoffs.fyi. Major corporations such as Tesla, Amazon, Google, TikTok, Snap, and Microsoft executed significant layoffs, while smaller startups also faced job cuts, with some ceasing operations entirely.

Continued monitoring of industry layoffs into 2025 will allow an analysis of the ongoing cutback trends. Later this year, detailed lists for both 2024 and 2025 will be published for easier understanding of these patterns.

Tracking layoffs enables insight into how these changes affect innovation in both large and small companies. It also highlights the potential implications of businesses adopting AI and automation for roles that were once deemed secure, serving as a reminder of the human consequences of layoffs amid rising innovation.

Boston Dynamics

Has dismissed 45 workers, constituting 5% of its workforce. A representative informed The Boston Globe that the layoffs affected “almost every department within the company.”

AMD

The customer and IT service management software provider is laying off 660 employees worldwide, accounting for 13% of its total workforce, as it aims to complete a significant restructuring effort by the year’s end.

Akamai

ShareFile

Meta has implemented layoffs across various teams as it strives to “align resources with long-term strategic objectives,” according to their email statement to StartupSuperb. Although the specifics about affected teams remain vague, it has been confirmed that Threads, recruiting, and legal teams are also impacted.

Boeing

The company plans to reduce its workforce by 10%, which translates to around 17,000 employees. These cuts follow a loss of $9.97 per share in Q3 amid a prolonged machinist union strike.

Stellantis

Stellantis is laying off 1,100 employees in Michigan, affecting the brands Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, and Dodge.

TikTok

The platform is laying off hundreds of employees, predominantly in Malaysia, as it shifts towards AI for content moderation. The number of impacted employees is cited as being fewer than 500.

Samsung

The company is reducing jobs in Southeast Asia and Australia to enhance operational efficiency. A spokesperson indicated to StartupSuperb that no specific targets have been established for job reductions, although the cuts may influence about 10% of the workforce in those regions.

Kaspersky

The firm is closing its UK office and laying off several workers, as confirmed by StartupSuperb. These reductions come shortly after the company began winding down its operations in the U.S.

NFX

The company has let go of four staff members as it aims to “rebalance” resources from its software and product divisions to the investment team, according to the general partner.

Eaze

The company is laying off 500 employees as it begins the process of winding down its operations. In a communication to employees, the CEO mentioned the “ongoing challenges of the California cannabis market” as a critical factor behind the closure.

TikTok

The platform has reduced its staff size by approximately 60 in various locations across the U.S., including Los Angeles, New York, and Austin, alongside layoffs in other markets. Reports from NPR indicate that the roles lost are primarily in sales and advertising.

Vroom

The company is terminating 90% of its workforce as it closes its online used car marketplace. Resources will be redirected towards two new business units: one concentrating on auto financing and the other dedicated to AI-based analytics.

Riot Games

The gaming company is reducing its workforce by 11%, impacting approximately 530 employees, to concentrate on “fewer, high-impact projects.” The makers of League of Legends are also disbanding their publishing division, Riot Forge, which has been operational for five years.
