I-Pop Icons Live marked a significant moment in Mumbai, introducing a refreshing energy to the city’s music landscape. A first-time partnership with Asian Paints brought in vibrant colours and innovative design, enhancing the overall musical experience.

On 7 November, Spotify brought together a lineup of some of the most significant pop artists in India, providing fans a chance to witness the evolution of the genre in real time. The I-Pop genre has been steadily gaining traction on the platform, thanks to young creators, diverse linguistic influences, and a fan culture that thrives on social media. Spotify successfully transitioned this digital phenomenon into a physical event, offering a premium, invite-only experience for ardent fans and Spotify Premium members.

The data attached to this moment is compelling. Spotify has reported a consistent rise in I-Pop’s popularity, with artists frequently appearing at the top of the Weekly Top Songs India chart. Currently, Aditya Rikhari’s “Sahiba” occupies the number one position, and 12 out of the top 20 tracks are I-Pop songs. The I-Pop Icons playlist, which debuted in August 2024, has already gained over 428,000 listeners, alongside other playlists such as I-Pop Rising, I-Pop Mohabbat, I-Pop Chill, and I-Pop Party, all housed within the broader Home of I-Pop hub for fans to delve deeper into the genre.

Dhruvank Vaidya, Head of Music and Podcast at Spotify India, clearly articulated this growth momentum. He stated that there has been a marked increase in the consumption of I-Pop music on the platform. Spotify is dedicated to expanding I-Pop in India through the playlist ecosystem, unique content creation with artists, and the inaugural I-Pop Icons Live event. According to the Wrapped data, Aditya Rikhari’s track ‘Sahiba’ currently leads the Spotify Weekly Top Songs India chart, while King’s ‘Maan Meri Jaan’ was the most streamed song in India during 2023. There is anticipation for continued growth as artists create more I-Pop content and expand their fan bases, with Spotify remaining a crucial player in connecting these artists with their fans.

The diverse lineup at the event reflected the contemporary pop soundscape of India. King, boasting over 9 million followers, continues to be a prominent pop figure on the platform. Armaan Malik, with more than 23 million followers and international collaborations, blends Indian pop with global music trends. Jonita Gandhi, recognised for her ability to perform in multiple languages, took the stage alongside emerging talents like Kushagra, Hansika Pareek, and Sanju Rathod. Aditya Rikhari, whose tracks are currently climbing the charts, added significant excitement to the evening.

While Spotify crafted the musical element of the experience, Asian Paints focused on creating a visually engaging environment that matched the essence of I-Pop. The collaboration marked the brand’s inaugural partnership with Spotify, contributing an artistic perspective to the event. Asian Paints created a large mural inspired by themes of celebration, rhythm, and vibrant colours. Central to the design was Chromacosm, a comprehensive architectural colour system featuring over 5,300 shades.

Moreover, the brand set up an interactive photo booth using its signature paint buckets, allowing fans to take home printed Polaroid photos in the shade Love Song, adding a personal touch to their I-Pop Icons Live experience. These installations acted as points of interaction, seamlessly merging colour and sound, energising the space where fans congregated.

A highlight of the evening was a moment involving Armaan Malik. After his performance, he visited the Asian Paints area to admire the mural. In a delightful surprise, Asian Paints gifted him a custom guitar painted in hues that reflected his favourite colours, echoing the mural’s palette. This gesture was a thoughtful way to merge music and design organically.

For Asian Paints, this partnership aligns with its aim to illustrate how colour can enrich experiences beyond just physical spaces. The brand consistently appears at cultural crossroads like art, cricket, and lifestyle, and this collaboration with Spotify introduced its design aesthetic to a younger demographic.
