Air India’s Progress Post-Privatisation
Air India has made significant strides since its privatisation, with plans for expanded global coverage in the coming years, according to the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson. He mentioned that the refurbishment of the single-aisle fleet, catering to domestic and short-haul international routes, is currently in progress and expected to be finished by mid-2025.
Acquisition and Transformation
In January 2022, the Tata Group acquired loss-making Air India from the government, initiating an ambitious five-year transformation plan. As part of its growth strategy, Air India successfully merged with Vistara in 2024, and the integration of Air India Express and AIX Connect was also achieved.
Fleet Expansion
In his New Year address, Wilson highlighted that these mergers, along with new aircraft deliveries, have propelled the Air India Group’s fleet to 300 aircraft. This expansion enables the airline to serve over 100 domestic and international destinations.
Future Investments and Infrastructure Development
“Air India’s global coverage is set to expand further, particularly with the recent addition of 100 aircraft to our order book, supplementing the earlier commitment of 470 made in 2023,” Wilson stated. The CEO indicated that these new aircraft will be supported by:
- A state-of-the-art 12-bay maintenance facility and maintenance training school in Bengaluru (Karnataka)
- A new flight school for 34 aircraft in Amravati (Maharashtra)
- A training academy located in Gurugram (Haryana)
India as an Aviation Hub
As one of the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation markets, India is making strides to establish itself as a global aviation hub, with Indian airlines providing direct flights to various international destinations. Wilson emphasised, “Air India has made considerable progress since privatisation, but we recognise that much work lies ahead.”

“Every one of our 30,000 employees is dedicated to enhancing the quality and consistency of our services across the board, aiming for Air India to become the world-class airline we aspire for it to be,” he added.
