Ola Electric Rights Issue: Bhavish Aggarwal Pledges Stake
Ola Electric is in the spotlight as promoter Bhavish Aggarwal has dedicated a 4.32% stake in the electric two-wheeler manufacturer to finance his involvement in the upcoming rights issue. According to a report filed with the National Stock Exchange, this pledge is specifically for funding Aggarwal’s subscription to the rights issue sanctioned by the Ola Electric board. It is important to note that no shares are being sold as part of this arrangement.
Details of the Rights Issue and Pledge
The Ola Electric board authorised a rights issue of up to Rs 1,000 crore on September 28. Following this, the company has submitted its Draft Letter of Offer to the exchanges. However, the latest communication from the company does not clarify how much funds are being raised by Aggarwal against the pledged shares or the precise amount he intends to invest in the rights issue.
Financial Context and Challenges
This strategic move occurs as Ola Electric aims to bolster its financial stance amid increasing pressures on its business. The company’s operating revenue saw a 45% decrease year-on-year, dropping to Rs 455 crore in Q1 FY27, down from Rs 828 crore in the previous year. Additionally, its electric vehicle registrations also fell by 25%, reaching 43,908 units during the same quarter. On a positive note, Ola Electric managed to reduce its net loss by 21.1%, bringing it down to Rs 336 crore for the quarter.
Previous Funding Efforts
Earlier this year, Ola Electric secured Rs 780 crore through a qualified institutional placement (QIP) in June, which was aimed at enhancing the company’s balance sheet and supporting its ambitious growth plans. The forthcoming rights issue will provide existing shareholders with an additional opportunity to invest fresh capital into the company, while Aggarwal utilises a segment of his existing stake as collateral for his participation.
Market Position and Competition
Since going public in August 2024, Ola Electric has been actively diversifying its electric two-wheeler offerings and expanding its manufacturing capabilities. This is crucial as it faces competition from established brands like TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, and Ather Energy. In the last trading session, Ola Electric’s shares closed at Rs 37.09 each, resulting in a total market capitalisation of Rs 17,162 crore.
