Highlights
BHIM App Growth
BHIM App has made a remarkable resurgence over the previous year, demonstrating significant growth in transactions, value, and overall rankings within the UPI ecosystem. This improvement signifies a boost in user adoption and interaction, even as the major players like PhonePe and Google Pay continue to dominate the market.
Transaction Volume and Value Surge
According to statistics from the National Payments Corporation of India, BHIM’s customer-initiated transaction volume skyrocketed by 4.7 times, reaching 175.93 million in February 2026 compared to 36.88 million in February 2025. In terms of value, the transactions processed through the app amounted to Rs 21,264 crore in February 2026, up from Rs 8,475 crore in February 2025.
Improving Rankings
The increase in transaction volumes has triggered a dramatic rise in BHIM’s rankings. By February 2026, the app ascended to the 6th position from 15th in February 2025 among UPI applications, marking one of the fastest recoveries in the ecosystem. For reference, BHIM was also ranked 6th in 2024.
User Adoption Growth
The upswing in user adoption is evident, with BHIM surpassing 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store. This growth in downloads correlates with heightened transaction activity, indicating enhanced user engagement rather than merely passive installations.
Market Landscape
Despite this upward trend, the UPI market remains concentrated, with PhonePe and Google Pay continuing to lead in customer-initiated transactions, trailed by Paytm. BHIM’s progress over the last year appears to be driven by improved branding, promotional discounts, and increased support within the ecosystem.
Branding and Promotional Efforts
The appointment of MS Dhoni as a brand ambassador is expected to enhance brand recall, especially in smaller towns. Additionally, the government’s emphasis on digital payments and growing concerns regarding fraud may encourage users to migrate towards a reliable, government-supported platform.
The Road Ahead for BHIM
For BHIM, the critical challenge lies in maintaining user retention and deepening engagement. While early momentum is promising, sustainable growth will hinge on the product experience and ongoing discount initiatives. In a landscape shaped by user habits and convenience, converting newfound interest into regular usage will be crucial for solidifying its position in the market over time.
