Cosmoserve Space: Pioneering Spacetech Innovation

Cosmoserve Space, a spacetech startup located in Hyderabad, has successfully secured $6 million in a seed funding round. This investment came from various investors, including Rebright Partners from Japan, Aranya Holdings, Naandi Ventures, and returning supporters AUM Ventures and Shakti VC. With this latest funding, the total investment in the company exceeds $9 million.

In September of the previous year, Cosmoserve raised $3.17 million in a highly sought-after pre-seed round, which was spearheaded by Alan Rutledge, alongside participation from AUM Ventures and Shakti VC.

The newly acquired funds will facilitate the progress of Base 1, technology demonstrations, and two forthcoming missions as stated by Cosmoserve in their press announcement.

Base 1: A Facility for Innovative Space Solutions

Cosmoserve has unveiled Base 1, a dedicated private facility aimed at space debris removal and satellite servicing. This establishment is engineered to advance technology focused on in-orbit repairs, refuelling, and the retrieval of inactive satellites.

The company asserts that Base 1 is the sixth such facility globally that is equipped with space vision effects and microgravity simulation capabilities. This infrastructure is pivotal for the designing, constructing, testing, and operating of technologies essential for satellite servicing and space debris management.

Local Sourcing and Manufacturing Initiatives

Currently, Cosmoserve procures approximately 60% of its mission components from local sources. The startup aims to increase domestic manufacturing capabilities by fostering the development of crucial technologies internally, thereby lessening reliance on imported optics, avionics, and space-grade electronics.

Mission Embrace: A Milestone in Space Exploration

In July 2026, Cosmoserve successfully launched its first payload, named Mission Embrace, aboard Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 rocket. Remarkably, the flight hardware was developed in less than four months, significantly ahead of the six-month projected schedule. Nevertheless, the robotic capture petals did not function as intended, providing invaluable data for subsequent enhancements.

Innovative Approaches to Satellite Servicing

Founded last year by Chiranjeevi Phanindra, Cosmoserve is working on a unique Dual Spacecraft Architecture aimed at optimising orbital servicing to reduce costs. This innovative strategy employs two spacecraft to service multiple satellites, deviating from the conventional one-to-one recovery approach.

The startup estimates that this method could lower satellite servicing expenses from approximately $10 million to under $1 million per satellite.

Future Endeavours and Developments

Cosmoserve is looking to test its robotic capture systems through microgravity flights, re-execute Mission Embrace, and carry out a comprehensive space debris capture demonstration in 2027.

The startup is part of a rising trend in Indian spacetech enterprises, concentrating on technologies ranging from launch vehicles and satellite production to space data and orbital infrastructure. Hyderabad has established itself as a significant hub for spacetech, bolstered by its aerospace and defence ecosystem, engineering expertise, and research capabilities.
