Flipkart Minutes Surpasses Swiggy Instamart in Dark Store Count

Flipkart Minutes is leading the way in the dark store market, outpacing Swiggy Instamart in the top 10 cities of India. As of August 2026, Flipkart Minutes operates 627 dark stores in these key locations, compared to Swiggy Instamart’s 615, according to a recent CLSA report. Additionally, Flipkart Minutes has achieved greater pincode coverage than Instamart across these cities.

Dark Store Distribution Across Major Cities

Blinkit maintains its market dominance with 969 dark stores in the top 10 cities, followed by Zepto with 828, Flipkart Minutes with 627, Swiggy Instamart with 615, and BigBasket with 497. Together, these five companies manage a total of 3,536 dark stores in the 10 cities examined by CLSA.

Key Locations Included in the Report

The report covers major cities including Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad, while omitting Amazon and JioMart from the analysis. Bengaluru boasts the largest network, featuring 735 dark stores, followed closely by Delhi with 531 and Hyderabad with 484. Mumbai has 372 stores, while Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad have 365, 293, 248, 225, 146, and 137 stores, respectively.

Market Insights and Trends

Blinkit holds a significant market share, claiming about 30% of dark stores across these top cities and over 34% at the national level. It leads in store count in six out of the ten cities, while Zepto dominates three others. The findings indicate that quick commerce is expanding into more urban areas, with dark stores now operational in 477 cities. As major players expand in established markets, emerging companies are testing waters in smaller cities before broader growth. Flipkart Minutes has notably increased its presence in Tier III cities by 42 times over the past year, including places like Ara and Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

Market Forecasts by CLSA

CLSA expressed a more favourable outlook for Eternal, Blinkit’s parent company, compared to Swiggy. They have assigned a target price of Rs 506 to Eternal, which is 53.5% higher than its closing price of Rs 329.6 on August 25, while Swiggy’s target stands at Rs 312, an increase of just 8.7% over its closing price of Rs 286.9. These findings reveal intensifying competition in quick commerce. Although Blinkit remains in the lead, the rapid rise of Flipkart Minutes beyond Instamart in these key cities highlights the swift evolution of the market as companies establish more dark stores and penetrate new urban areas.
