Fragaria Fruits Secures Funding to Revolutionise Indian Fruit Industry
Fragaria Fruits, a farming company, has successfully raised $2 million in a seed funding round led by WEH Ventures. The funding was also supported by Rainmatter, Spiral Ventures, and angel investors, including Sashi Kumar. Previously, the startup had garnered Rs 1.5 crore in a pre-seed funding round. The newly acquired funds will be directed towards scaling operations in Bengaluru, broadening its premium fruit selection to incorporate blueberries and raspberries, while enabling a year-round provision of high-quality, sustainable produce for the Indian market, as stated in a press release.
Industry Gap and Mission
Founded in 2024 by Harish Varadharajan, Timothy Chad Van Niekerk, and Damian López-Salazar, Fragaria Fruits aims to fill a vital gap within India’s fruit sector. The startup focuses on providing consistently high-quality, fresh fruit available throughout the year. Its mission is to transform the fruit-eating experience for consumers in India by delivering premium, sustainably cultivated produce using world-class agricultural methods.
Innovative Practices and Offerings
The Chennai-based startup’s flagship brand, Oh! Fruits, features European strawberries cultivated in Chennai through advanced vertical farming technology. These strawberries are reported to be twice as sweet as typical Indian varieties, pesticide-free, and boast a shelf life that is up to three times longer than standard market options. Fragaria’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its water recycling systems, the use of solar energy, and ongoing efforts to diminish the environmental impact of farming while ensuring affordability.
Scalable Operations and Future Plans
Utilising Controlled Environmental Agriculture (CEA) and vertical farming techniques, Fragaria has developed a scalable and sustainable model for growing premium strawberries all year round. The company aims to boost production in Bengaluru, elevating daily output from 2–3 kg to 120–150 kg. Currently, the startup faces no direct competition from local brands in the fruit segment, although a few imported brands like Driscoll’s (berries), Zespri (kiwi), and Rockit (apples) operate in India.
