CarbonStrong – Climate-Tech Startup Revolutionizing Low-Carbon Binders

CarbonStrong, a climate-tech startup, has successfully secured Rs 12.5 crore in seed funding, led by the IAN Angel Fund and supplemented by Rainmatter, Social Alpha, Spectrum Impact, and Full Circle Ventures. The funding will facilitate the establishment of its initial production facility, enable team expansion, support product development and testing, and transition from customer trials to full-scale production, as per a press release.

About CarbonStrong and its Innovative Solutions

Established in 2022 by Harsh Jain and Vikramaditya Singh, CarbonStrong is focused on creating low-carbon binders by repurposing industrial waste to substitute up to 50% of cement in concrete. The startup asserts that its approach not only cuts costs but also diminishes carbon emissions, all while ensuring that concrete performance remains unaffected without necessitating alterations to existing facilities or processes.

Customer Trials and Market Focus

The Bengaluru-based startup has initiated multiple customer trials and paid pilot projects, showcasing its materials in demonstration programmes across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. CarbonStrong is also directing its efforts towards manufacturers of precast concrete and paver blocks, with the ambition of achieving an annual production capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes within the next two years.

Environmental Impact of Cement Production

Cement production is responsible for over 8% of global CO2 emissions, and existing alternatives struggle to replace cement without sacrificing performance. CarbonStrong innovatively transforms industrial waste from industries like coal and steel into cementitious materials, allowing for a significant reduction in cement usage.

Emerging Startups and Institutional Support

Other innovators in this sector include GreenJams, which focuses on creating low-carbon construction materials from crop residues and industrial by-products, as well as CarbonCraft, which utilises construction and industrial waste for producing geopolymer-based wall cladding and various building products. The climate-tech sector has garnered institutional interest as well. In February, the Technology Development Board (TDB) provided financial aid to CarbonCraft to help in the commercialisation of its ultra-low-carbon wall claddings. In June 2026, both CarbonStrong and Satiq Concrete Manufacturer were selected among nine climate-tech startups for urban sustainability initiatives, receiving grants of up to Rs 35 lakh.
