India: Pioneering the Future of Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Compact Car Creativity

Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation has unveiled its intentions to enter the electric small car market following the launch of its inaugural electric vehicle (EV), the SUV e VITARA. This model is set to make its global introduction in India, which has been designated as the company’s production base. This announcement was made by Toshihiro Suzuki, the Representative Director and President, on Thursday.

The esteemed Japanese automaker believes that despite a decline in sales of small cars, these vehicles will continue to play a crucial role in the Indian market. Suzuki remarked that there are “one billion individuals” anticipated to shift from two-wheelers to four-wheelers in the coming years, leading to an ongoing demand for economical cars. This perspective was shared during a media interaction.

Maruti Suzuki India will present the e VITARA on Friday at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, held at Bharat Mandapam.

Suzuki’s Vision for Small Electric Cars

– During the introduction of the e VITARA, Suzuki conveyed that compact cars are exceptionally suited for electric platforms.
– He highlighted the necessity of mastering EV manufacturing techniques before diversifying into the small car sector, stating that the intention is to transition to EVs for small vehicles once a thorough understanding has been established.

When questioned about the company’s future plans for electric vehicles, Suzuki clarified that no definitive timeline would be given for entering the segment of small electric cars at this moment. He indicated that following the launch of the e VITARA, feedback from customers would be crucial in shaping Maruti Suzuki’s future approaches to small electric vehicles.

Expansion of Electric Offerings

Suzuki further indicated that the two-wheeler division, Suzuki Motorcycle India, would be showcasing its electric scooter, the e Access, at the same expo alongside the e VITARA. He noted that these battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are global models, with India establishing itself as the production centre.

– He emphasised that “India’s role as an export hub for both four-wheel and two-wheeler products is becoming increasingly important.”

Addressing the rationale behind designating India as an export hub, Suzuki commented that “The scale advantages in India are crucial for Suzuki, enabling the company to deliver high-quality, appealing products worldwide,” which includes regions such as Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, as well as various Asian markets.

Global Export Plans

The e VITARA is scheduled to be exported initially to Europe, followed by Japan and other international markets. Suzuki confirmed that Maruti Suzuki India resumed exports to Japan last year with the Fronx model, which currently has an outstanding order of 15,000 units and is being shipped to over 70 countries from India. In 2024, the company attained a record export total of 326,000 units, achieving its highest results for both the calendar and fiscal years.

Market Outlook for Small Cars

Regarding the future of small cars in India, despite the increasing popularity of SUVs, Suzuki stated that “Sales of Maruti Suzuki’s small cars remain competitive with the SUVs of other manufacturers.” He expressed optimism that small cars would maintain their relevance in the market, affirming that “There are one billion individuals likely to transition from two-wheelers to four-wheelers and they will require a dependable, cost-effective vehicle within the small segment.”
