India has officially joined the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics (UN-CEBD). • 2.2. Strategic Opportunities
  • 3. The Impact of Big Data

About the UN-CEBD

The UN-CEBD was established to explore the advantages and challenges of Big Data, particularly its potential to monitor and report on sustainable development goals.

India’s Contribution

As a member of this committee, India will play a vital role in developing global standards and methodologies for effectively harnessing Big Data and data science in official statistics. According to a statement from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI):

Key Initiatives by India

India’s active participation in the UN-CEBD will underscore its innovative contributions, including:

– Establishment of the Data Innovation Lab
– Utilisation of alternative data sources such as satellite imagery and machine learning in policymaking

Strategic Opportunities

This membership offers a strategic platform for India to align its domestic advancements in Big Data and data science with international objectives. It highlights the nation’s ability to spearhead transformative projects in the data sphere.

The Impact of Big Data

Big Data and sophisticated data science techniques possess the capability to revolutionise the generation and distribution of official statistics. By incorporating non-traditional data sources such as the Internet of Things (IoT), satellite imagery, and private sector datasets, India aims to:

– Modernise statistical processes
– Improve the accuracy of statistical estimates
– Ensure timely access to vital data necessary for effective policy formulation and governance

This initiative aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to enhance statistical production, promote innovation in data collection, processing, and analysis, and reduce the time lag associated with data availability. Moreover, it aims to refine decision-making and equip policymakers with real-time insights to ensure evidence-based decisions that address critical socio-economic challenges.
