Record Growth in India’s Startup Ecosystem for FY26

India’s startup ecosystem has achieved significant milestones, adding more than 55,000 officially recognised ventures in FY26, as revealed by a recent government announcement. This represents the highest annual increase since the introduction of the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016. Consequently, the total number of DPIIT-recognised startups has surpassed 2.23 lakh nationwide. These startups encompass various sectors, including technology, healthcare, education, agritech, and manufacturing, highlighting a broad expansion of entrepreneurial initiatives.

Since their establishment, these recognised startups have created over 23.36 lakh direct employment opportunities. Additionally, more than 1.07 lakh startups feature at least one woman director or partner, which accounts for nearly 48% of all recognised entities, as reported.

Geographical Distribution of Startups

Startup growth is becoming increasingly equitable across the nation, with recognition in all states and union territories. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Gujarat have emerged as prominent centres for recognised startups and job creation up to March 31, 2026.

Government Support for Startups

The government continues to support startups through several crucial initiatives, including the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS), catering to different stages of growth.

Under the FFS, more than Rs 7,000 crore has been allocated to over 135 AIFs by FY26, which subsequently invested more than Rs 26,900 crore into upwards of 1,420 startups. In addition, the government has recently introduced the Startup India Fund of Funds 2.0, featuring a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore.

Innovation and Intellectual Property

Startup-driven innovation is also fostering intellectual property advancements, with startups filing over 19,400 patent applications. The number of patent filings increased from over 2,850 in FY25 to more than 4,480 in FY26.

Increasing Participation in Public Procurement

Moreover, startups are becoming more active in public procurement via the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), which has developed into a significant demand channel for them. As indicated in the report, startups on GeM secured cumulative orders exceeding Rs 19,000 crore in FY26.
