India Bans Pakistan-Based YouTube Accounts Amid Kashmir Tensions

India has taken significant measures by banning several YouTube accounts linked to Pakistan following a recent terror incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir. This development has heightened the ongoing tensions between the two nations.

Banned YouTube Channels

The list of banned channels includes notable Pakistani news outlets such as Samaa TV, Bol News, Geo News, Dawn News, and GNN. Additionally, individual YouTube accounts belonging to figures like Muneeb Farooq and Arzoo Kazmi have also been restricted.

Furthermore, the YouTube account of renowned Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has also faced a ban.

Content Availability Notification

While the landing pages for these channels may still be accessible on YouTube, clicking on them results in the following message:

“This content is currently unavailable in this country because of an order from the government related to national security or public order. For more details about government removal requests, please visit the Google Transparency Report (transparencyreport.google.com).”

Current Blocking Measures

It seems the Indian government has opted to block YouTube channels affiliated with Pakistani entities without affecting their official websites. Should a broader measure be deemed necessary, a directive will be issued to local Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Past Bans and Monitoring Efforts

The Indian government previously imposed a ban on various Chinese applications, including TikTok, due to data security and privacy concerns that arose after the Galwan Valley border clash in 2020.

Moreover, authorities are closely monitoring social media discussions related to the terror attack in Kashmir.

Communication with Media Outlets

The External Publicity and Public Diplomacy (XPD) Division of the Ministry of External Affairs expressed strong sentiments to Jackie Martin, the India Head for BBC, about their coverage of the terror incident. The division formally addressed the BBC, criticising the designation of terrorists as “militants.”

Media Coverage Restrictions

In an earlier directive, the Indian government urged all media platforms to avoid broadcasting live coverage of defence operations and the movement of security personnel.

The circular stated, “In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and other security-related operations.”
