Sahkar Taxi: The New Cooperative-Based Taxi Service in India

The Indian government plans to introduce a cooperative-based taxi service known as Sahkar Taxi throughout the nation, providing a competitive alternative to well-established ride-hailing services such as Ola and Uber. This initiative will place the government in direct competition with not only Uber and Ola but also other emerging app-based taxi aggregators like BluSmart.

About Sahkar Taxi

In an announcement made in Parliament on Wednesday, the government revealed that the new taxi service will register various modes of transport, including two-wheeler taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis. Unlike the services offered by private companies, Sahkar Taxi aims to ensure that all profits are directed straight to the drivers, rather than being accumulated by large corporations.

Existing Cooperative Models

A cooperative model is not new in India, as demonstrated by the Yatri Sathi service introduced in West Bengal under the leadership of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government. Initially launched in Kolkata, Yatri Sathi has successfully expanded its operations to other locations, such as Siliguri, Asansol, and Durgapur.

Similar Initiatives in Karnataka

In Karnataka, a privately owned taxi app named Namma Yathri operates on a similar premise, ensuring that profits reach the drivers. This app provides a variety of transportation services, including cabs, two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and pooling options. This setup allows drivers greater control over their earnings while also offering passengers an affordable and efficient way to travel.
