IndiGo Enters Electric Air Taxi Market
IndiGo has made a strategic investment of Rs 10 crore in Sarla Aviation, joining the electric air taxi industry. This investment, facilitated through IndiGo Ventures in January, is in line with the airline’s interest in advancing urban air mobility technologies.
About Sarla Aviation
Founded in 2023, Sarla Aviation is focused on developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft that will serve as flying taxis. Their flagship model, identified as Shunya, is specifically designed for urban transportation and is anticipated to be launched in Bengaluru by 2028.
Aircraft Specifications
Shunya is engineered to accommodate up to 680 kilograms and offers seating for six passengers, not including the pilot. This innovative aircraft aims to utilise existing helipads located at hotels, hospitals, and tech parks for effective operations.
Previous Funding
The startup previously secured $10 million in January of last year, during a funding round led by Accel, with notable contributions from individuals such as Binny Bansal, Nikhil Kamath, and Sriharsha Majety.
IndiGo’s Investment Context
The investment comes after the previous non-binding partnership between IndiGo and Archer Aviation was discontinued due to delays. This move highlights IndiGo’s commitment to the electric air taxi space amidst a growing global interest in eVTOL startups.
Global Backing for eVTOL Startups
In the broader eVTOL market, various startups globally have garnered support from major airlines. Joby Aviation, based in the US, has backing from Delta Air Lines and Toyota Motor Corporation, while Archer Aviation has attracted investment from United Airlines.
