As we enter 2025, the venture funding environment for Indian startups appears to be off to a slow start, with total capital raised remaining in the double-digit range. This trend is not unexpected, as January typically begins with limited funding activity. In the first week of January, $14.4 million was secured across six transactions, a considerable drop from the $47 million raised during the same week last year.

The reduction in funding can be primarily linked to the extended holiday season in December, which led to a decrease in the number of deals closed.

However, despite these lower funding levels, the situation does not paint a dire picture for the Indian startup ecosystem in 2025. In fact, venture capital (VC) funding for Indian startups in 2024 has reportedly increased by over 20% compared to 2023, indicating a positive shift as the sector recovers from the funding winter challenges.

Noteworthy developments include:

  • Initial Public Offerings (IPOs): In 2024, there were 13 IPOs within the startup ecosystem, and this number is expected to grow in the current year.
  • Investors gaining exit options: The increase in IPOs offers investors viable exit strategies, which were less common in previous years.

Moreover, it is expected that several venture capital firms will be raising new funds this year. Notably, the esteemed VC firm Accel has started the year strong by finalising its seventh India fund at an impressive $650 million.

While the initial stage for the Indian startup ecosystem may seem lacklustre, there remains a strong sense of optimism among stakeholders.
