Korean Food Startup Gimi Michi Raises $1 Million in Seed Funding

Korean food startup Gimi Michi has successfully raised $1 million in a seed funding round, spearheaded by IndiaQuotient, with contributions from DeVC, Titan Capital, and IIMA Ventures. Founded by Nishank Goyal, Akhil Kumar, and Bodhi Rathor, the company is based in Gurugram and is focused on creating a genuine Korean FMCG brand tailored for Indian customers. The founders bring valuable experience from consulting and consumer sectors, involving companies like BCG, Mondelez, and AB InBev.

Utilisation of Funds

The newly acquired funds will be directed towards product development, expanding the team, marketing initiatives, and enhancing distribution through quick commerce platforms, as conveyed in a press release from the company.

Current Operations and Growth

Having launched just six months ago, Gimi Michi is currently prominent in the Korean ramen market, reportedly achieving the position of the leading noodles brand on Flipkart. The startup has already surpassed Rs 1 crore in monthly net sales and is experiencing an impressive growth rate of approximately 60% month-on-month, despite offering a single product.

Market Insights

Nearly 50% of the company’s sales originate from Tier II and Tier III cities. Additionally, it boasts repeat purchase rates that exceed the average seen across e-commerce and quick commerce channels.

Leveraging Korean Culture

The company is capitalising on the increasing appeal of Korean culture in India, driven by K-dramas, K-pop, and social media influence. Goyal remarked that Gimi Michi was initiated with the belief that Korean cuisine could experience a surge in popularity akin to that of Korean entertainment, highlighting the existing familiarity of consumers with Korean food and their desire for authentic options at reasonable prices.

Future Trends in Korean Cuisine

Kumar noted that Korean cuisine is poised to become a significant food trend among Gen Alpha consumers, similar to how Chinese and Italian cuisines gained popularity in the past decades.

Market Opportunities

The potential for growth in this sector is also attracting significant attention. Industry predictions indicate that the Indian ramen market could surpass $1 billion within the next ten years, while Korean noodles are expected to hold a considerable share of noodle sales on quick commerce platforms. Recently, various major FMCG companies such as ITC Limited, Nestlé, and Hindustan Unilever Limited have launched Korean-inspired product lines.

Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Gimi Michi intends to broaden its offerings beyond ramen, venturing into categories such as sauces, snacks, and ready-to-eat products to establish a dedicated Korean food brand within India.
