Deep-Tech Startup Discovered Materials Secures $9 Million in Funding
Deep-tech startup Discovered Materials has successfully acquired $9 million (Rs 85 crore) in seed funding led by Lightspeed India Partners. This round also saw participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners, and a network of global angel investors, including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar. The newly secured funds are earmarked for the expansion of their team, the enhancement of their laboratory, and the scaling of their AI research agents, as disclosed in a press release.
Focus on AI-Powered Thermal Solutions
Founded by Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, Discovered Materials is an AI-centric deep-tech startup concentrating on resolving thermal dissipation issues in AI chips that can exceed 140W/cm² in output. The enterprise is engaged in developing thermally conductive dielectric materials intended for 3D chip packaging.
Innovative Use of AI Agents
The startup employs cloud-based autonomous AI agents tasked with examining thousands of virtual material hypotheses daily. These agents utilise custom model harnesses that incorporate leading-edge AI models. The material candidates generated by AI are subsequently put through physics simulations to evaluate their stability, dielectric constants, and thermal properties.
Material Discovery Bench Initiative
Discovered Materials has introduced the Material Discovery Bench, designed to assess how advanced AI systems tackle real-world semiconductor material challenges. The startup’s future plans include patenting promising material candidates and licensing the resulting thermal management and semiconductor technologies to chip manufacturers globally.
Rapid Development of Thermal Materials
The company has reported that its AI systems can develop innovative thermal materials within a span of three months, achieving performance levels similar to those of products that conventionally required years to create.
Growing Interest in Indian Deep-Tech Startups
The deep-tech startup landscape in India continues to capture the attention of investors, with funding recently spanning various sectors including AI, mobility, healthcare, and energy technologies. For instance, Bengaluru-based E3 Electric.Ai secured Rs 100 crore in a Series A funding round led by BluVenture Holdings to advance its AI-enhanced electric scooter, E3 TRION. Additionally, eNLife Research obtained Rs 6 crore in a seed funding round led by Piper Serica VC Fund to develop an AI-driven blood diagnostic platform for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. By July 2026, deep-tech startups in India had raised a total of $1.62 billion across 140 equity funding rounds.
