Nova Spectral AI Secures Seed Funding for Innovative Imaging Technology
Nova Spectral AI, a company specializing in physical AI vision technology, has successfully raised Rs 21.15 crore (approximately $2.25 million) through a seed funding round led by Shastra VC, with additional contributions from Equirus InnovateX Fund and various angel investors. The funds will facilitate team expansion and the development of a prototype ready for field use within 18 months, as stated in a press release.
About Nova Spectral AI
Founded in the current year by Anish Priyadarshi and Sanjeev Kumar, Nova Spectral AI is innovating in lead-free colloidal quantum dot (cQD) shortwave infrared (SWIR) image sensor chips, utilizing standard silicon CMOS technology aimed at defence intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and physical AI applications. Based in Bengaluru, the startup is creating an indigenous quantum dot SWIR image sensor chip.
Advantages of the New Technology
This latest technology allows cameras to capture images in situations where traditional cameras may struggle, including low-light environments, haze, and smoke. Applications for this technology include drones, surveillance systems, robots, and autonomous vehicles.
Manufacturing and Cost Reduction
Nova Spectral AI employs CMOS compatible manufacturing processes alongside indium arsenide (InAs) colloidal quantum dots to create infrared sensors. The objective is to decrease sensor costs by up to 100 times compared to traditional indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) technology.
Potential Applications in Defence
In the defence sector, this technology could enhance SWIR imaging capabilities across drones and ISR platforms while also reducing the reliance on imported sensors. The company is also eyeing applications in smartphones, wearable devices, robotics, and automotive technologies.
The Future of Infrared Imaging
Colloidal quantum dot SWIR image sensors designed on standard silicon CMOS are being investigated as a means to make infrared imaging more cost-effective and scalable for various applications needing visual capabilities in challenging conditions.
Another company making strides in this domain, SpectraGaze Systems, has raised Rs 3.7 crore in seed funding, led by GVFL, to enhance its development of indigenous infrared detectors, optical imaging sensors, and electro-optical payloads tailored for space and defence applications.
