Paytm Investment Strategy: One97 Communications Invests in Paytm Money

Paytm, under One97 Communications, has revised its financial strategy, opting out of the proposed bonus share issuance. Instead, the decision has been made to invest up to Rs 100 crore into its fully owned subsidiary, Paytm Money. The company’s board sanctioned the investment through a rights issue aimed at bolstering the subsidiary’s operations.

This new capital is intended for enhancing technology, meeting regulatory capital needs, and expanding the investment and wealth management services provided by Paytm Money, as highlighted in a stock exchange statement. Paytm Money offers a range of services, including stock broking, distribution of mutual funds, and various other investment products.

Growth Metrics and Financials

In the financial year 26, Paytm Money achieved a turnover of Rs 212.95 crore, a substantial increase from Rs 172.93 crore in the previous financial year. Given that Paytm retains 100% ownership of the subsidiary, this rights issue will not affect its shareholding.

Strategic Focus on Business Growth

Alongside the new investment, the board has chosen to forgo the earlier proposed bonus share allocation after an extensive review. The emphasis is now on nurturing business growth and amplifying profitability to build long-term value for its shareholders.

This decision arrives shortly after Paytm announced a profitable quarter, revealing a net profit of Rs 220 crore in the first quarter of FY 27, a significant increase from Rs 123 crore during the same timeframe last year. The revenue from operations surged by 28% year-on-year to Rs 2,448 crore, driven by advancements within the payments and financial services sectors.

Future Directions in Wealth Management

The recent strategy adjustment indicates that Paytm is prioritising investments in its financial services sector instead of providing bonus shares to its shareholders. Wealth management has emerged as a critical aspect of the company’s growth strategy as it endeavours to extend its scope beyond payments and fortify its position in the online investment marketplace.
