UPI Payments in Malaysia Enabled by Razorpay

Razorpay, through Razorpay Curlec, has teamed up with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) to facilitate UPI payments in Malaysia. This initiative allows Indian travellers to make payments to Malaysian merchants using UPI applications, with transactions settled in Malaysian Ringgit (RM). This integration eliminates the necessity for cash or international cards for Indian visitors. Malaysian merchants will receive their payments in the local currency via Razorpay Curlec.

Cross-Sector UPI Acceptance

Razorpay Curlec will provide UPI acceptance to businesses across various sectors, including retail, hospitality, travel, and small enterprises. In 2024, over one million Indian tourists visited Malaysia, contributing more than Rs 110 billion in spending. This partnership is designed to streamline cross-border payments and enhance payment acceptance for merchants catering to Indian visitors.

Transaction Insights

UPI recorded 19.6 billion transactions in India in September 2025. This arrangement offers Malaysian businesses immediate access to Indian UPI users, facilitating cross-border payments with instant settlement capabilities.

Current Offerings by Razorpay Curlec

Razorpay Curlec presently supports various payment solutions, including recurring payments, card payments, payouts, subscription management, and billing services for businesses in Malaysia. The partnership will be leveraged to broaden Razorpay’s cross-border payment capabilities and enlarge its merchant network.

NIPL’s Global Expansion Goals

NIPL is committed to advancing UPI and RuPay beyond India by forging partnerships with payment service providers and central payment networks. The launch in Malaysia marks a significant step in NIPL’s strategy to establish UPI acceptance in international markets.

Global UPI Expansion

UPI has reached several new countries, including France and the UAE, with agreements in progress with Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Peru. It is already operational in countries like Bhutan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Nepal, and recently became active in Qatar.
