Indian Coffee Market Growth: Sleepy Owl’s Journey
Coffee has increasingly become a topic of daily discussions, as numerous Indians delve into various types and blends. While preferences often lean toward Brazilian or Vietnamese coffee, it is essential to note that India ranks as the world’s fifth-largest coffee exporter, contributing approximately 5% of the total global exports. This surge in interest has led to the emergence of several indigenous coffee brands seeking to make their mark in the industry. One such brand is Sleepy Owl, which has experienced remarkable growth, expanding nearly fourfold within three years and increasing its revenue from Rs 21.5 crore in FY23 to Rs 82 crore by FY26.
According to its annual financial reports obtained from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), Sleepy Owl’s revenue from operations surged by 86.4% year-on-year, reaching Rs 82 crore in FY26 compared to Rs 44 crore in FY25. Sleepy Owl is a local coffee brand catering to the at-home coffee consumption segment, offering a product range that includes cold brew, instant coffee, hot brew bags, ground coffee, and ready-to-drink coffee.
The primary revenue source for Sleepy Owl comes from sales of coffee products, which encompasses coffee sachets, cans, bottles, packets, and boxes. In terms of costs, coffee procurement constituted about 22% of total expenses, escalating by 84.3% to Rs 43.5 crore in FY26. Employee benefits expenses also rose to Rs 9 crore during this fiscal year. The firm allocated Rs 20 crore for advertising in FY26, while other expenditures, including shipping, legal, technology, and operational costs, increased to Rs 85 crore, up from Rs 47 crore in FY25.
Sleepy Owl successfully reduced its net losses by 17% to Rs 1.76 crore in FY26, down from Rs 2.12 crore in the previous fiscal cycle. The company is approaching breakeven point, with its Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) and EBITDA margin standing at -6% and -1.8%, respectively. Per unit, it invested Rs 1.04 to generate every rupee of revenue in FY26.
Building a brand dedicated to coffee for home consumption presents numerous challenges, with several startups striving to penetrate this market. In this context, Sleepy Owl achieving Rs 82 crore in revenue while bringing its losses closer to breakeven marks a positive development for the company. Nonetheless, competition intensifies, as brands like Blue Tokai and Third Wave Coffee expand their operations. Blue Tokai, for instance, recently secured $25 million and is reportedly expanding its Series D funding round. Blue Tokai and Third Wave Coffee reported revenues of Rs 325 crore and Rs 285 crore, respectively. Established competitors like Tata Starbucks and Cafe Coffee Day hold much larger market shares, with revenues of Rs 1,367 crore and Rs 1,094 crore, respectively. For Sleepy Owl, the upcoming challenge lies in sustaining this growth trajectory and achieving profitability as competition within the coffee sector escalates.
