SoftBank Sells Shares in Meesho

SoftBank’s recent transaction involves the divestment of 8 crore shares of the e-commerce platform Meesho for approximately Rs 1,650.4 crore through a block deal conducted on the NSE on Thursday. As per stock exchange data, the shares were sold by SoftBank’s investment entity SVF II Meerkat (DE) LLC at a price of Rs 206.30 each. This transaction accounts for roughly 1.73% of Meesho’s total stake.

Buyers Involved in the Transaction

The shares were acquired by a variety of institutional investors, including Societe Generale – ODI and the Motilal Oswal Large and Midcap Fund. Additional buyers comprised funds managed by prominent institutions such as Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, and Manulife, along with participation from Goldman Sachs Bank Europe, HDFC Standard Life Insurance, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, and Canara Robeco Mutual Fund, alongside other institutional investors.

Changes in SoftBank’s Stake

Prior to the sale, SVF II Meerkat held an 8.60% stake in Meesho as of June 2026. Following this latest sale, SoftBank’s holding will be reduced to about 6.87%, assuming all sold shares originated from its entity.

SoftBank’s Ongoing Strategy in India

This exit is part of SoftBank’s ongoing trend of selling off stakes in publicly listed technology firms in India. In August, SoftBank disposed of shares in Lenskart, worth Rs 2,888 crore, through another block deal, following a similar sale of Rs 2,873 crore in June.

Market Activity Highlight

The transaction coincides with a vigorous period for the secondary market involving new-age Indian firms. In August alone, investors executed 17 block and bulk deals totaling Rs 26,337 crore (approximately $2.77 billion) across 12 companies, including Meesho, Groww, Eternal, and Lenskart. Notably, Meesho’s early investors offloaded shares valued at Rs 1,949 crore through a block deal, complemented by a Rs 970 crore stake sale from Y Combinator.

Meesho’s Q1 Financial Performance

In the first quarter of FY27, Meesho observed a substantial increase in operating revenue, which surged by 48% year-on-year, reaching Rs 3,713 crore. Additionally, its net loss saw a significant reduction of 54%, decreasing from Rs 289 crore in the corresponding quarter last year to Rs 133 crore.

Market Capitalization Update

At the conclusion of Thursday’s trading session, Meesho’s shares settled at Rs 209.74, leading to a market capitalization of Rs 96,983 crore (approximately $10.2 billion).
