Telegram Founder Accuses Reliance of Access Disruption

Telegram has recently been at the centre of controversy as its founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, has alleged that Reliance is disrupting access to Telegram for users outside of India. This accusation comes just days after the Indian government temporarily restricted access to the messaging platform due to issues surrounding the NEET re-examination.

Allegations of Network Changes

In a post on X, Durov claimed that Reliance altered internet routing protocols, which negatively impacted Telegram users in various countries beyond India. He suggested that these modifications led to connectivity problems for numerous individuals and identified this as a type of BGP hijacking, a term referring to the misdirection of internet traffic through inappropriate routes.

Widespread Impact Beyond India

Durov emphasised that the challenges faced by Telegram were not confined to India and had repercussions for users in additional regions. He asserted that Reliance had been notified regarding the issue, yet no resolution had been reached.

Government Actions and Criticism

These allegations emerged shortly after the Indian government mandated a temporary blockade on Telegram, effective until June 22, due to concerns about the dissemination of leaked NEET examination materials. Durov had previously condemned the ban, arguing that blocking Telegram would adversely affect millions of users without tackling the underlying issues contributing to the leaks.

Hints of Competitive Conflict

Furthermore, in his latest remarks, Durov hinted at a potential competitive dimension, noting that Meta, the owner of WhatsApp, has investments in Jio Platforms. WhatsApp serves as Telegram’s primary competitor in India and numerous other markets, raising further eyebrows within the industry.

Industry Reactions and Awaited Confirmation

Durov’s assertions have ignited discussions within the technology sector, suggesting that the disruption may extend beyond India. However, he has yet to disclose detailed technical evidence to support these claims. Reliance has not provided any official response to the allegations thus far.

Ongoing Investigations

Independent confirmation from internet monitoring organisations is also awaited. Startup Superb has reached out to Reliance for their comments on this matter.

If these claims are substantiated, they may prompt serious inquiries regarding internet accessibility, telecom operations, and the handling of digital platforms amidst government-imposed restrictions.
