Wint Wealth: Revolutionising Fixed Income in India

Wint Wealth emerged through the vision of Ajinkya Kulkarni, who visited the Pune office with a straightforward concept. The goal was to create a liquid fixed income product aimed at providing consumers with an appealing return of about 12% at that time. This notion intrigued many, as it represented a potential opportunity to establish something akin to Yieldstreet for the Indian market. Discussions began immediately.

This conversation sparked extensive brainstorming regarding fixed income, considering how Indian consumers approached it, identifying existing gaps, and exploring ways to enhance the overall experience. This vision was soon dubbed the Passive Income App of India, marking the inception of what ultimately became Wint Wealth.

Much has evolved since that inception, both within the company and the overall market landscape. However, Wint has truly emerged as a leader in making fixed income accessible to Indian consumers. The team developed the product, educated consumers on a wide scale, and crafted what is arguably one of the finest fixed income experiences available in India.

Understanding the Indian Consumer Landscape

The journey of Wint Wealth represents a broader philosophy regarding consumer financial services at Better. When discussing the Indian consumer, there is often a tendency to group hundreds of millions of users into one significant market. This perspective does not reflect reality.

India is, in fact, a collection of numerous consumer segments, each housing potential consumers numbering in the tens of millions, all of whom exhibit unique characteristics. Their professions, income reliability, aspirations, saving habits, investing preferences, and suitable financial products differ significantly.

A gig worker’s financial service needs contrast sharply with those of a young salaried individual. This individual is distinct from a non-resident Indian (NRI), a cryptocurrency enthusiast, a mass affluent investor, or an ultra-high-net-worth individual (UHNI).

Customized Financial Experiences

The belief was clear: if consumers vary drastically, why should the financial experiences be uniform? There was a recognised opportunity to create an enhanced experience—potentially ten times better—for each distinct segment. It was believed that these variations might warrant entirely different companies.

The required founder attributes to intimately understand one consumer group can differ greatly from another. Aspects such as product development, distribution strategies, trust-building, partnerships, and customer outlook can all take different forms. The idea of a generic financial services company with multiple products for various segments was not embraced.

This line of thinking greatly influenced the approach to consumer fintech investments. Wint represented one manifestation of this strategy. Historically, fixed income had been cumbersome for consumers to discover and invest in. Wint reimagined that experience, aligning it with a modern consumer’s desires.

The Journey of Other Innovative Firms

Gullak approached the issue from another angle entirely. The concept of gold savings resonated deeply within India’s cultural fabric. The chance was to simplify gold saving, crafting an experience around a long-standing tradition. Witnessing the team develop the product, brand, and partnerships within the offline jewellery ecosystem has been an exhilarating experience, and they continue to explore the vast potential ahead.

Mudrex was another pivotal investment. It became clear that crypto would capture a different investor demographic, yet investing in it within India could pose challenges and confusion. Mudrex established one of the most reliable frameworks for Indian users to engage with crypto, placing compliance at the forefront of its market strategy. Observing the growth of Mudrex over the years has been a remarkable journey.

Then there is SBNRI, which targeted an entirely distinct consumer segment. Millions of Indians residing abroad aspire to invest in their homeland. Nevertheless, the process typically involves navigating complexities such as banking, KYC, taxation, repatriation, and numerous documentation requirements unique to NRIs. SBNRI challenged the norm by simplifying this experience. They were among the first to focus on enhancing the NRI investment journey, developing the necessary products and workflows to dramatically improve ease of use. They have built a strong brand in this domain, and are only at the beginning of their journey.

Unified Purpose Behind Diverse Companies

When examining Wint, Gullak, Mudrex, and SBNRI, they appear as distinctly unique entities. This diversity is precisely the point. Each encapsulates the same foundational idea: take specific consumer segments, identify what is flawed or unnecessarily difficult within their financial experiences, and deliver a significantly better solution tailored for them.

Initially, a compelling portfolio began to take shape around this concept, showcasing various founders tackling different aspects of financial services, all aiming for a superior experience for their respective customer types. Then AI entered the equation.

This advancement prompted a fresh examination of the same thesis. While existing companies would undoubtedly leverage AI to enhance their products, there was also curiosity about whether AI could facilitate the creation of an entirely new financial experience for segments with differing relationships with money.

Gen Z and the Future of Financial Services

Gen Z was an obvious focus area. The financial attitudes of a 22 or 25-year-old regarding earning, spending, saving, travel, experiences, work, and investing diverge considerably from the mindsets encouraged in previous generations. However, most financial products continue to emerge from traditional frameworks, expecting users to adapt accordingly.

The belief was that AI could fundamentally shift this paradigm. This led to the latest investment aligned with this vision—Smooth Money. The concept of Smooth is as a personal financial companion for Gen Z, designed to understand their lives, behaviours, and financial objectives.

Instead of delivering judgements about lifestyle choices, the approach is to acknowledge existing behaviours while helping individuals make informed financial decisions that align with their realities. Smooth can assist with creating savings plans, setting goals, evaluating spending habits, and evolving into a conversational partner regarding finances—essentially acting as each Gen Z individual’s personalised financial advisor.

Although still in the early stages of development, there is considerable excitement about the potential of Smooth. In many aspects, it represents the latest iteration of the same foundational thesis that originated years earlier.

The assertion remains: there is not a single Indian financial services consumer. Numerous ‘Indias’ exist within India, characterised by differing incomes, professions, behaviours, aspirations, and attitudes towards money. As technology progresses, it enhances the possibilities of crafting significantly improved financial experiences for each distinct group.

The evolution is transitioning from a limited selection of rigid, one-size-fits-all financial products towards a world where founders can design tailored experiences for specific consumers. AI should further drive this degree of personalization.

In observing Wint, Gullak, Mudrex, SBNRI, Smooth, and various other ventures pursued under this ethos, it’s clear that this journey remains in its infancy. In fact, it feels as though the progression from generic financial solutions to uniquely designed financial experiences is just beginning.

The third instalment of a five-part series by Vaibhav Domkundwar delves into the consumer fintech thesis underpinning investments in Wint Wealth, Gullak, Mudrex, SBNRI, and Smooth Money. The discussion emphasises the notion that India is not a monolithic consumer market, with distinct segments demanding tailored financial products and experiences. The forthcoming two sections will examine additional microtrends and insights.
