Uber Layoffs in India: Streamlining Operations

Uber is laying off approximately 200–250 employees in India as part of a global restructuring process aimed at simplifying its operations and reducing management layers, as reported by ET. The layoffs in India are expected to impact teams within its People and Earners organisations.

Global Restructuring Overview

Globally, Uber is eliminating about 3,300 positions, approximately 10% of its workforce, marking its largest reduction since the Covid-19 pandemic. The restructuring will concentrate on consolidating teams and reducing management layers as Uber reallocates resources to its mobility, delivery, and autonomous vehicle sectors.

Reasons Behind the Layoffs

The decision comes as Uber aims to streamline its organisational structure following years of expansion. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted that the company’s growth has resulted in excessive management layers, fragmented ownership, and teams that no longer align with current operational scales.

Specifics of the India Layoffs

Reports indicate that the layoffs in India will affect some engineers working on Uber’s internal recruitment platform. Employees have been informed about the layoffs, with further notifications expected in the coming days.

Company Statement

An Uber spokesperson commented on the restructuring, stating that globally, the company is making organisational adjustments to reduce management layers for increased agility. As part of these changes, certain valued team members in India will be departing, and the company will provide support through this transition. The commitment to India as a key market remains firm, with ongoing efforts to innovate locally for riders and drivers. In fact, Uber is enhancing its regional operations in India to advance its mobility business across the Asia-Pacific region.

Current Focus for Uber

While undergoing these changes, Uber is also concentrating on enhancing its autonomous mobility services and robotaxi initiatives. The company continues to invest in its core ride-hailing and delivery operations. Furthermore, Uber is leveraging AI technologies to automate various processes and lower operational costs. In July 2026, the company had reduced around 10% of its customer service workforce as it expanded its use of AI in support operations.
