India’s consumer wallet signifies a $1.4 Tn economy segmented across various spending categories that define household financial priorities. An analysis of PhonePe’s transaction data indicates Indians allocate their spending roughly across obligatory expenses (39%), discretionary expenses (29%), and necessity expenses (32%).

Within these spending categories, there are 7-10 prominent areas where expert advisory can significantly affect household outcomes: healthcare, home purchases, education, travel planning, financial services, retail shopping, entertainment, groceries and daily essentials, and utility management.

The Indian SME and MSME segments present substantial scale as well, with self-employed individuals seeking affordable and personalised advisory services that span accounting, taxation, procurement, and marketing.

Expectations for profit margins from direct subscriptions, with a 20% upsell, could rise to as high as 75% if the model is executed well.

The most advanced implementations would foster lasting relationships where AI advisors gain a deep understanding of a household’s preferences, financial limitations, health needs, saving goals, and aspirations. This facilitates a more nuanced advisory that builds in value over time, akin to having digital family advisors that rival the traditional advisory available only to high-net-worth clients.
