Air India Integrates Apple AirTag for Enhanced Baggage Tracking

Air India has set a precedent as the first airline in Asia to incorporate Apple AirTag within its baggage-tracking system and mobile application, enabling customers with Apple gadgets to monitor their luggage securely. This innovative feature supports iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices that operate on iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later.

Enhanced Baggage Tracking Features

The integration is designed to improve the existing baggage-tracking functions of the airline, which already provide timely updates through the Air India mobile app and the website. Customers can enter their flight details in the ‘My Trips’ section of the app to automatically receive baggage information once their luggage has been checked in. Furthermore, both the app and website include a ‘Track my Bags’ option, allowing passengers to scan their baggage receipt barcode for real-time updates.

Leadership Insights on Digital Innovation

Dr Satya Ramaswamy, the Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Air India, stated that the airline is committed to continuing innovations and implementing advanced digital solutions as part of its focus on customer satisfaction. He mentioned the airline’s excitement in providing guests with a novel method to trace their luggage in cases where it does not arrive on time at the final destination.

Statistics and Expectations

Air India handles over 100 million pieces of luggage annually, revealing that more than 99.6% of these items reach their intended customers. However, for the small fraction of instances where luggage is lost due to airport baggage handling issues, flight misconnections, or other reasons, the new AirTag integration is anticipated to facilitate a quicker recovery process.

Reporting Delayed or Misplaced Baggage

In instances of delayed or misplaced luggage, passengers are encouraged to report the situation at Air India’s Baggage Counter at the airport. The airport personnel will assist in completing a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Subsequently, passengers can share their AirTag location link through the ‘Find My’ application on their Apple device, linking it to the PIR via the Air India mobile app or website. This data is then utilised by authorised airport staff to locate the baggage and reunite it with the passenger.

Ensuring Privacy in Baggage Tracking

To protect privacy and safety, the sharing of location ceases automatically once the baggage is reunited with the passenger or after a duration of seven days. Passengers also possess the ability to manually terminate location sharing at any point in time.

Addressing Customer Concerns

On various social media platforms, Air India often faces criticism as one of the less reliable airlines regarding the management of passenger luggage. The website LuggageLosers.com ranks airlines according to the number of lost luggage reports, utilising continuous updates from social media insights. According to this ranking, Air India is noted for losing roughly one out of every 41 bags.
