Bharti Airtel and SpaceX Partnership for Starlink Satellite Internet in India

Bharti Airtel is collaborating with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, to introduce Starlink satellite internet services to India. This collaboration represents Starlink’s first formal engagement in the country, reinforcing Airtel’s commitment to providing satellite broadband connectivity, especially in rural and underprivileged areas.

The agreement, however, is contingent upon obtaining regulatory authorisations, as SpaceX is currently seeking the green light from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to commence Starlink operations in India.

Through this partnership, Airtel plans to incorporate Starlink into its existing satellite broadband offerings, which already feature Eutelsat OneWeb, ensuring comprehensive high-speed internet coverage across the nation. This initiative aims to close India’s digital gap by delivering connectivity to remote villages, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and businesses.

Significance of the Airtel and SpaceX Collaboration

Gopal Vittal, the Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel, emphasised the importance of this collaboration, noting that working alongside SpaceX to provide Starlink services to Airtel customers in India is a significant achievement and further illustrates their dedication to next-generation satellite connectivity. He mentioned that Starlink will enhance Airtel’s product offerings, ensuring reliable and affordable broadband for Indian users.

Both companies are also considering the prospect of retailing Starlink equipment through Airtel’s retail network and offering Starlink services to business clients. Furthermore, Airtel’s established ground infrastructure and market knowledge will aid in supporting SpaceX’s operations in India.

Competitive Landscape in India’s Satellite Broadband Sector

The satellite broadband market in India is rapidly becoming more competitive, with Eutelsat OneWeb (supported by Airtel) and Reliance Jio’s joint venture with SES having already obtained GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite) licenses and IN-SPACe approvals.

Gwynne Shotwell, the President and COO of SpaceX, shared enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that the collaboration with Airtel can unleash the transformative potential of Starlink for the people of India. He acknowledged Airtel’s crucial role in the telecom sector of India and expressed that collaborating with them to enhance their direct offerings aligns well with their business goals.

Regulatory Challenges for Starlink in India

Despite the partnership, acquiring regulatory approval remains a significant obstacle for Starlink’s official introduction in India. SpaceX has reportedly agreed to comply with the Indian government’s data localisation and security stipulations, which previously hindered the approval process.

Additionally, India’s policies on satellite communication are evolving, with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) anticipated to soon finalise the pricing structure for satellite spectrum allocation. The government intends to allocate spectrum through administrative processes with a specified fee structure, even while telecom companies advocate for an auction-based approach.

Growth of India’s Space Economy

As the space sector in India continues to develop, IN-SPACe predicts that India’s space economy will surge to $44 billion by 2033, capturing 8% of the global market share, rising from the current 2%.

With over 6,000 Starlink satellites already operational in space and Amazon’s Kuiper project planning to deploy 3,236 satellites by early 2025, the competitive environment in India’s satellite broadband market is intensifying. Should regulatory approvals be granted, the partnership between Airtel and SpaceX’s Starlink has the potential to transform the connectivity landscape in India.
