Amazon Changes Policy on Alexa Voice Recordings

Amazon has announced that starting from 28 March 2025, there will be a significant change regarding Alexa voice recordings on Echo devices. This decision indicates that local processing of these recordings will come to an end, with all data being processed in Amazon’s cloud. This development has stirred concerns regarding privacy, particularly given Amazon’s track record concerning data management and the scrutiny from regulators.

End of Local Processing for Voice Recordings

According to a report from Ars Technica, Amazon has communicated to its users who activated the “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” feature that this option will no longer be available. The message conveyed in the email explained that as Amazon seeks to boost Alexa’s functions with generative AI, dependent on the extensive capabilities of Amazon’s secure cloud, the company would be discontinuing this feature. Furthermore, Amazon assured customers that voice recordings would be deleted after processing, and users still have the chance to opt out of saving recordings.

Introduction of Alexa+

This change is anticipated to coincide with the rollout of Alexa+, a new subscription model for the AI assistant that will include advanced generative AI functions. Among the features of Alexa+ is Voice ID, which empowers Alexa to recognise individual users and provide tailored interactions. However, it is important to note that Voice ID functionality will be disabled for users who opt not to store their voice recordings.

Official Statement on User Privacy

An Amazon representative shared with The Verge that these modifications aim to enhance Alexa’s functions, all while safeguarding user privacy. The representative stated that the design of the Alexa experience is committed to protecting customer privacy and securing their data, emphasising that this commitment remains unchanged. Amazon plans to concentrate on the privacy tools and controls that customers find most useful and that align well with generative AI experiences utilising the strength of Amazon’s secure cloud.

Previous Privacy Concerns Surrounding Amazon

Issues concerning Amazon’s approach to user data have not surfaced recently. In 2023, Amazon reached a settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), agreeing to a $25 million penalty due to allegations concerning the mismanagement of children’s data privacy. Additionally, the company settled for $5.8 million regarding accusations that its Ring doorbell cameras had infringed upon customer privacy. A 2019 report from Bloomberg revealed that Amazon staff were permitted to access as many as 1,000 Alexa voice recordings per nine-hour shift to enhance their speech recognition and understanding of natural language.

Feature Limited to US Customers

Amazon has specified that the “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” feature was accessible solely to US users with Echo devices configured in English, claiming that a mere 0.03% of its users took advantage of this option. Despite the shift in policy, users will still retain the ability to manage their data preferences via the Alexa Privacy dashboard or through the Alexa application.
