Affordable MacBook Launch on the Horizon

Apple is reportedly gearing up to unveil a more budget-friendly MacBook, with production aiming to kick off later this year and deliveries expected in early 2026. Industry sources cited by DigiTimes indicate that the new laptop may be priced at $699 for the general market, while it could be available for $599 through Apple’s education discount programme. This pricing positions it significantly below the current entry-level MacBook Air, which retails at $999, or $899 for educational purchasers.

Specifications and Features of the Affordable MacBook

This upcoming model is anticipated to sport a 12.9-inch display, which is smaller than the 13.6-inch screen found on the MacBook Air. It will likely have a lower resolution and brightness compared to the Air’s Liquid Retina display. Sources suggest that the device will be available in various colour options, including silver, blue, pink, and yellow, featuring an ultra-slim and lightweight design. Analysts estimate it may be lighter than the M4 MacBook Air, which weighs 2.7 pounds, although it remains unclear if it will dip below 2.5 pounds.

Performance and Configuration

The new device is said to be powered by Apple’s A18 Pro processor, the same chip that will feature in the forthcoming iPhone 16 Pro, rather than an M-series chip. Although it may not match the performance of Apple’s silicon designed for Macs, the A18 Pro is expected to enable Apple Intelligence, granting users access to an expanding suite of AI-driven capabilities. The base configuration is rumoured to include 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with some expectations for Apple to provide a 256GB option in the entry-level model.

Production and Market Positioning

Mass production of certain components is projected to commence by the close of the third quarter of 2025, with final assembly scheduled to occur in Quanta Computer’s factories during the fourth quarter.

Industry analysts propose that Apple may target this device as a direct competitor to Chromebooks and low-cost Windows laptops, potentially increasing MacBook shipments by 30-40%. Projections suggest that between 5 million and 7 million units will be available at launch. However, its pricing strategy could overlap with Apple’s iPad offerings. For example, an 11-inch iPad equipped with an A16 chip retails at ₹36,900 for students, implying that Apple might position this new model as a viable traditional laptop alternative for educational and budget-conscious consumers.

As of now, Apple has not confirmed any specifics regarding the device, including whether it will be classified under the MacBook Air range or represent a revival of the standalone “MacBook” branding.
