Apple Addresses Dictation Issue Involving ‘Racist’ and ‘Trump’

Apple is addressing a bug within the iPhone’s dictation feature that has led to the incorrect transcription of the word ‘racist’ as ‘Trump’. This issue has gained traction on platforms like TikTok and various other social media sites.

The tech giant has recognised the problem, attributing it to a defect in the speech recognition model. Apple has begun implementing a solution to rectify this issue.

Users have reported that when they uttered ‘racist’ using the dictation function, the iPhone would momentarily display ‘Trump’ before it reverted to the correct term. As per a report from the New York Times, Apple clarified that the speech recognition system occasionally presents words that sound alike before arriving at the right choice.

Previous Controversy with Voice Recognition Systems

This incident is not the inaugural occasion where a tech firm’s voice recognition technology has sparked political debate. In the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. elections, Amazon’s Alexa provided varying responses regarding the reasons to support Donald Trump compared to Kamala Harris. Alexa declined to outline reasons for supporting Trump, whilst occasionally providing justifications for backing Harris. Amazon subsequently labelled this as an error and rectified the situation.

Apple’s Commitment to Investment

In a separate announcement, Apple has detailed plans to invest over $500 billion in the United States over the next four years. This initiative includes the hiring of 20,000 new employees along with the production of Apple TV+ content across 20 states. This news followed a meeting between Apple CEO Tim Cook and former President Trump last week, although it remains uncertain whether this investment strategy was influenced by that encounter.
