Apple’s Renewable Energy Investment in India

Apple’s renewable energy investment in India, announced on May 7, involves a Rs 100 Crore commitment aimed at creating new clean energy capacity. The technology leader plans to establish more than 150 MW of green energy capacity, which is expected to minimise pollution and enhance green entrepreneurship in the region.

In this initiative, Apple is working alongside renewable energy firm CleanMax to implement the new renewable energy capacity throughout the country. This move aligns with the company’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire operations by 2030.

Sarah Chandler, who serves as Apple’s vice president of Environment and Supply Chain Innovation, noted that Apple’s dedication to environmental sustainability is also fundamental to driving innovation globally. The expansion into India’s clean energy sector signifies pride in the company’s effort to safeguard the nation’s invaluable natural assets.

According to Apple’s official release, the funding will facilitate the creation of over 150 MW of fresh renewable energy capacity, sufficient to supply power to over 150,000 average Indian households annually.

The tech giant also has intentions to amplify its initiatives to enhance renewable energy across its supply chain in India. Previously, Apple collaborated with CleanMax to implement rooftop solar solutions designed to energise its offices and retail units in India using entirely renewable resources.

Apple has partnered with a conservation organisation, WWF-India, to endorse recycling and waste management programmes focused on recovery. The company has also implemented the model established by WWF-India and waste-management leader Saahas Zero Waste in Goa to set up facilities for collecting, sorting, and recovering recyclable materials while ensuring traceability. This will significantly reduce plastic contamination in surrounding ecosystems.

Apple stated that WWF-India is broadening its waste management efforts to areas such as Coimbatore, supported by local communities and authorities. The company has also aligned with Acumen to support six green startups concentrating on waste management, circular economy, and regenerative agriculture.
