iPhone 17 Launch Announcement and Product Discontinuation
iPhone 17 series unveiling arrives as Apple prepares for one of its most significant announcements this year, scheduled for September 9 during the “Awe-dropping” event at Apple Park. In addition to the new devices, the company is poised to retire eight current products, refining its offerings before the next generation.
Four iPhones to be Retired
The highlight of the forthcoming event will be the iPhone 17 series, poised to supersede several earlier models. It is anticipated that the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be removed from Apple’s official store. Although third-party retailers may still carry these models for a while, sales through Apple will cease.
This strategy supports Apple’s aim to maintain standard models at lower prices while phasing out previous Pro variants. The updated line-up is expected to include:
- iPhone 16e (₹51,499 in India)
- iPhone 16 from $699 (₹69,999 in India)
- iPhone 16 Plus from $799 (₹78,999)
- iPhone 17 from $799 (₹79,900)
- iPhone 17 Air from $949 (₹99,999)
- iPhone 17 Pro from $1,049 (₹1,34,999)
- iPhone 17 Pro Max from $1,199 (₹1,45,000)
Market analysts predict there may be slight price changes, including a potential $50 increase for the iPhone 17 Pro, especially with expanded storage options. The price for the iPhone 17 Pro Max may also be adjusted depending on final configurations.
Apple Watch and AirPods Updates
The restructuring will also impact other product lines. Apple is expected to discontinue the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch SE (second generation). As is customary, Apple refreshes its smartwatch line annually, with new variants seamlessly replacing older ones.
The AirPods Pro 2 are also reportedly on the list for discontinuation. Nevertheless, Apple might keep them at a lower price point, depending on the introduction of the upcoming AirPods Pro 3.
What to Anticipate from the Event
Apple’s choice to eliminate four iPhones, three Apple Watch models, and one AirPods variant showcases its initiative to streamline the product range whilst ensuring that all iPhones on the market are compatible with Apple’s advanced features.
The iPhone 17 launch event is set for 9 September, during which Apple will likely introduce its latest smartphones, smartwatches, and audio products while bidding farewell to several well-known items in its portfolio.
