Hypertension Notifications on Apple Watch for India

Hypertension notifications have been activated for Apple Watch users in India, with the purpose of alerting wearers when their device identifies patterns that could indicate chronic high blood pressure. This feature aims to uncover over one million undiagnosed cases within its initial year.

Understanding Hypertension

An estimated 1.3 billion adults across the globe suffer from hypertension, making it the primary modifiable risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disorders. Often symptomless, hypertension can be overlooked during standard clinical examinations, creating significant health risks. The system developed by Apple addresses this issue by utilising an algorithm that analyses heart sensor data continuously over a 30-day period.

How the Feature Works

The feature utilises the optical heart sensor to assess how blood vessels react to each heartbeat. If consistent patterns linked with hypertension are detected by the watch, users will receive a notification via the Health app on their iPhone. According to Apple, this provides individuals with the chance to implement early lifestyle adjustments or start treatment before the condition worsens.

Scientific Validation of the Feature

Apple emphasizes that the feature is firmly grounded in scientific research. It has been trained on data from numerous studies involving over 100,000 participants, followed by a clinical trial with more than 2,000 individuals. The company recognises that, while the system may not identify every case, it can achieve a reach that surpasses traditional screening methods.

Expert Insights on Hypertension Detection

Professor Dorairaj Prabhakaran, executive director of the Centre for Chronic Disease Control and incoming president of the World Heart Federation, remarks that hypertension is one of the most common yet frequently undiagnosed health problems. He believes that integrating opportunistic detection into a device that people wear every day will enhance access to early diagnosis, enabling better-informed discussions between patients and their healthcare providers.

Recommendations for Users

Apple recommends that anyone who receives a hypertension notification should monitor their blood pressure for seven consecutive days using a third-party cuff and share the findings with a healthcare professional. This advice is in line with the most recent recommendations from the American Heart Association regarding the diagnosis and management of hypertension.

This feature is available from today and can be activated via the Health app on an iPhone running iOS 17 Pro or a later version.
