Apple and Google Partner for Gemini AI Model Integration

Apple Inc. has announced a new collaboration with Google to embed the Gemini AI model into Siri and Apple Intelligence, potentially valued at around $5 billion, which is roughly Rs 45,265 crore. This partnership represents one of the most substantial commercial AI distribution agreements to date.

Strategic Benefits of the Agreement

The partnership provides Google with an immediate revenue source and entry to hundreds of millions of Apple users, while enabling Apple to progress on the long-awaited transformation of Siri and its extensive artificial intelligence agenda.

Details of the Partnership

Earlier this week, on January 12, Apple confirmed its plans to incorporate Google’s Gemini model into its redesigned Siri and Apple Intelligence platform. This initiative follows Apple’s 2024 agreement with OpenAI, which introduced ChatGPT to iPhones and Macs. Apple’s statement clarified that the Gemini integration would not replace the existing ChatGPT functionality, indicating a multi-model approach to AI within its ecosystem.

The Importance of AI for Apple

The magnitude of this partnership highlights the strategic significance of AI in Apple’s operations. The company has been noticeably behind competitors like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI in launching advanced consumer-oriented AI solutions.

Insights from Former Executives

A former Apple executive shared with the Financial Times that this agreement was an unavoidable consequence of Apple’s cautious investment strategies in large-scale AI infrastructure compared to its rivals.

Apple’s Struggles in the AI Race

Apple provided a glimpse of an upgraded, more conversational AI-driven Siri in 2024, promising substantial enhancements to its virtual assistant. However, the company has faced challenges in delivering this upgrade on schedule, attracting criticism for lagging in the generative AI competition.

The Role of the Gemini Partnership

The collaboration with Gemini is anticipated to be central to Apple’s upcoming AI advancements. With the integration of Gemini 3 into Apple Intelligence and Siri, the aim is to enhance reasoning capabilities, personal context awareness, and on-screen comprehension. These enhancements would greatly expand Siri’s functionalities across iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Impact of the Partnership

Given that Apple boasts over 2 billion active devices globally, this partnership provides one of the most influential distribution channels for Google’s AI models to date.

Future Implementation of Gemini-powered Siri

Apple is projected to launch its Gemini-enabled Siri with the iOS 26.4 update, expected to be revealed in March or April of 2026, as per insights from industry insiders.

If the schedule remains on track, this update would signify Apple’s most substantial AI enhancement in over a decade, marking a critical moment in determining how consumers engage with artificial intelligence on their devices.
