AI-Powered Visual Intelligence Integration in Apple Watch

Apple is delving into the integration of cameras within its Apple Watch series to bolster AI-driven Visual Intelligence functionalities, as reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. This development showcases Apple’s commitment to creating AI-centric wearables, with the goal of reducing dependency on external AI systems like ChatGPT and Google Search in favour of proprietary technology.

Highlights

  • 1 AI-Powered Visual Intelligence on Apple Watch
    • 1.1 Broader AI Initiatives Beyond the Apple Watch
    • 1.2 Camera Placement and Model Variations
    • 1.3 Apple’s In-House AI Strategy
    • 1.4 Timeline and Future Expectations

AI-Powered Visual Intelligence on Apple Watch

According to Gurman, Apple plans to launch camera-enabled Apple Watches by 2027, representing a significant advancement in its AI capabilities beyond mobile devices. The Visual Intelligence feature, which first appeared with the iPhone 16 series, allows gadgets to engage with the physical environment, much like Google Lens. This AI-driven function can analyse objects, recognise text, and deliver contextual details, such as information about restaurants or data from event flyers.

Broader AI Initiatives Beyond the Apple Watch

Apple’s ambition regarding AI extends beyond the Apple Watch. Gurman has also pointed out that the company is testing AirPods equipped with cameras to further embed Visual Intelligence into its range of wearables.

Camera Placement and Model Variations

Apple is evaluating various camera placements throughout its watch series. The standard Apple Watch is anticipated to include a display-integrated camera, potentially utilising either a cutout or under-display technology. In contrast, the Apple Watch Ultra may feature its camera module positioned on the side, close to the digital crown and power button, where there is extra space. This arrangement would allow users to easily tilt their wrists to capture photos or scan nearby objects.

Apple’s In-House AI Strategy

At present, Apple’s Visual Intelligence relies on AI models sourced from external vendors. However, Gurman indicates that by the launch of these new AI-enabled wearables, Apple plans to shift towards its proprietary AI models. Mike Rockwell, who previously led the development of the Vision Pro headset, is anticipated to direct this effort while still contributing to visionOS.

Timeline and Future Expectations

The release of the camera-integrated Apple Watch is expected to be after 2027, aligning with Apple’s extensive AI strategy. Gurman emphasizes that this time frame is also influenced by recent leadership changes within Apple’s AI team. Rockwell’s team is additionally tasked with the enhancement of Apple’s awaited Siri LLM upgrade, another vital AI feature anticipated to launch alongside the new devices.

Apple’s venture into AI-empowered wearables positions it directly against competitors like Meta, which has already released smart glasses with AI-enabled functionalities. If successful, Apple’s initiative could transform smartwatches into dynamic AI companions capable of delivering real-time contextual information to users.
