Major Online Services Disruption in India
A major online services disruption struck numerous key platforms on Friday afternoon, with users in India finding themselves unable to access various services, including design tools, grocery delivery, and brokerage platforms. This disruption seems to have been extensive, impacting services like Canva, Blinkit, Downdetector, Zerodha, Angel One, Zepto, and the web hosting provider Hostinger within a similar timeframe.
Details of the Disruption
Blinkit users encountered an in-app message indicating an error, stating that something had gone wrong and suggesting they try again later, accompanied by an error code. Users of Canva faced difficulties loading the platform, which displayed a plain white screen showing a “500 Internal Server Error” along with a Cloudflare footer, hinting at potential issues with upstream hosting or routing.
The disruption drew attention since Downdetector, a commonly used service to monitor such outages, was also intermittently unavailable. This left many users unable to verify outage reports, thereby enhancing the confusion surrounding the situation.
The chaos intensified when several brokerage platforms, such as Zerodha and Angel One, started experiencing system downtime as well. Users on the social media platform X complained about their inability to log in or execute trades. Zepto, recognised as one of India’s rapidly expanding quick commerce platforms, also displayed error notifications, while customers of Hostinger faced challenges accessing their hosted websites and dashboards.
Potential Causes
Despite Cloudflare not issuing any statements, the prevalence of “500” errors across various platforms hinted at a larger infrastructure-related issue that might be impacting services reliant on similar routing or protective measures.
As of the current moment, companies have not provided comprehensive explanations regarding the root cause of the extensive disruptions. While some users are reporting partial service restoration on certain platforms, others remain non-functional.
Canva communicated via X that their CDN provider, Cloudflare, was experiencing an outage affecting their service. They expressed that this was not the desired experience for users, assuring them that efforts were being made to restore normalcy.
Our CDN provider, Cloudflare, is experiencing an outage that’s impacting Canva. It’s not the experience we want for you and we’re working with them to get things back up and running. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we work to bring things back to normal.
