ChatGPT Faces Increased Competition from Google’s Gemini and Elon Musk’s xAI Grok
ChatGPT’s prominence in the consumer AI sector is increasingly challenged by Google’s Gemini and Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok, as reported by the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). This report sheds light on the evolving landscape of AI tool adoption among consumers over the past two and a half years, revealing how newer competitors are gaining ground against established entities.
The analysis identifies 14 companies that consistently rank among the most utilised AI products. This list includes prominent names such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Character AI, Midjourney, ElevenLabs, and Hugging Face. These companies cover a range of applications, including general assistance, image and video editing, voice generation, productivity tools, and model hosting.
Google’s Significant Progress with Gemini
For the first time, Google has made notable advancements, securing four positions on the ranking with Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs. The firm remarked that “These products now have their own separate domains, allowing their growth to be tracked independently.”
Gemini: The Close Competitor to ChatGPT
Gemini has proven to be ChatGPT’s nearest competitor, ranking as the No. 2 AI application on both mobile and web platforms. However, it has nearly half the monthly active users of OpenAI’s flagship product. On Android specifically, Gemini dominates, boasting almost 90% of its active user base.
Grok’s Rapid Growth
Grok, on the other hand, holds the fourth position on web platforms and the 23rd on mobile. It currently lacks a stand-alone app, which won’t be available until late 2024. Despite this, it has surpassed 20 million monthly active users, experiencing a 40% increase following the launch of Grok 4 in July. Additionally, Meta AI is featured on the list but lags behind, securing the No. 46 spot on the web and failing to make the top mobile rankings amidst privacy concerns.
Chinese Developers Making Waves in the AI Space
Chinese developers are also significantly represented. ByteDance’s Doubao ranks No. 4 on mobile, while Moonshot AI’s Kimi and Alibaba’s Quark have made it into the web’s top 20. Overall, 22 of the top 50 mobile AI applications have their origins in China, although only three are predominantly used within the country.
Emerging Startups in AI
The report further mentions rising startups such as Replit and Lovable, noted for their AI-driven coding tools. It also underlines that app store actions against ChatGPT clones have enabled the proliferation of more innovative products.
Despite the intensifying competition, ChatGPT remains the global leader. However, as Andreessen Horowitz indicates, the swift expansion of Gemini and Grok marks a trend toward a more fragmented market, with various players striving for user engagement.
