Discontinuation of ChatGPT Voice Feature on Mac
OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of a significant feature from the ChatGPT application on macOS. As detailed on ChatGPT’s support page, the Voice feature will be unavailable for Mac users after January 15, 2026. This news may be surprising for many Mac users who depend on the Voice function for hands-free use. Nevertheless, OpenAI states that this change aims to enhance voice experiences across different platforms.
ChatGPT macOS App Will No Longer Include the Voice Feature
Post January 15, the ChatGPT macOS application will cease support for the Voice feature, thus limiting hands-free capabilities for desktop users. However, users will still have access to this feature via chatgpt.com, as well as on iOS, Android, and Windows applications. Although this essential feature is set to be removed, OpenAI has reassured users that no other functions on macOS will be impacted. Consequently, after the removal, those using the ChatGPT Mac app will need to rely on the web version or mobile applications to utilise the Voice feature.
Future Updates and Potential Changes
At present, there has not been any official confirmation regarding the permanent removal of the Voice feature, but a report from 9To5Mac suggests that this change may be temporary, with a possibility of its return in a future update. It seems OpenAI might be working to enhance the functionality of the Voice feature. Users may need to wait for further announcements from OpenAI for reassurance regarding the situation for Mac users.
Implications of the Change
Another possible factor influencing the removal could be the upcoming launch of GPT-5.2 Codex, as OpenAI aims to market the Mac app as a serious productivity tool. The ChatGPT Mac application is anticipated to be primarily utilised for coding, text writing, editing, and integration with other applications. Therefore, eliminating the Voice feature could strategically position the app as a formidable AI assistant tailored for developers and writers alike.
