Browser Security Risks: ChatGPT Atlas and Chrome Privacy Ranking
According to a 2025 study on browser security risks conducted by Digitain (via Neowin), Google Chrome is noted to be among the most concerning browsers regarding privacy and currently holds the second position in this regard. Chrome commands over 72% of the market share, which increases the vulnerability of its users; even minor security issues could potentially impact millions of individuals. On the contrary, OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Atlas has been identified as the worst browser when it comes to user privacy protection.
ChatGPT Atlas Privacy Concerns
The report reveals that ChatGPT Atlas was designed without prioritising user privacy and has failed nearly all state partitioning assessments. Consequently, this AI browser does not prevent websites from tracking user activity, rendering users’ entire browsing history and digital footprint open to risks. The overall privacy risk score for the AI browser stands at an alarming 99 out of 100, while Chrome’s score is 76 out of 100. These ratings were based on three key factors: privacy and anti-fingerprinting measures, tracking and data blocking capabilities, and the security of connections and navigation.
Comparison with Other Browsers
In contrast, Apple’s Safari browser secured a score of 49 out of 100 for its efforts in user privacy, making it a more secure option than many widely used browsers, including Chrome, Edge, and OpenAI’s Atlas. Paruyr Harutyunyan, the head of digital marketing at Digitain, acknowledged the increasing deployment of AI browsers but pointed out that just because a browser incorporates AI technology, it does not inherently guarantee safety or privacy.
Security Measures for Users
For those utilising any of the aforementioned browsers, it is vital to adopt security measures. Users should restrict or deny access to location services, contacts, and phone permissions. Checking and managing the data that browsers can access and removing unnecessary permissions is also essential. Additionally, users should disable browser sync with their Google accounts, turn off ad personalisation, and implement further security measures to enhance their online safety.
