Cloudflare Workforce Reduction Amidst AI Shift

Cloudflare, a leading internet infrastructure and cybersecurity firm based in the US, is set to reduce 20% of its workforce, impacting more than 1100 employees across the globe. The company announced in a blog post that the rise of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) has “fundamentally changed” its operational methods, allowing smaller teams to manage tasks that once needed much larger groups.

CEO Insights on Workforce Changes

During an earnings call, CEO Matthew Prince remarked that this decision was not made lightly, but he believes it is the correct move. He pointed out that some positions may no longer align with Cloudflare’s future priorities. Additionally, he noted that the implementation of AI within the company has surged by 600% over the past three months, characterising the shift as an “agentic AI-first operating model.”

Reasons Behind the Lay-Offs

The company clarified that the layoffs are a result of organisational restructuring and process improvements rather than due to employee performance issues or short-term budgetary constraints.

As of the end of 2025, Cloudflare employed 5,156 full-time staff members, which indicates that these cuts will affect approximately one-fifth of its employee base. Furthermore, the company anticipates spending between $140 million and $150 million on severance payments in the second quarter.

Financial Performance Amid Restructuring

In the first quarter of this year, Cloudflare outperformed Wall Street expectations with a revenue of $639.8 million, surpassing the predicted $621.9 million. Its adjusted profit also exceeded forecasts at 25 cents per share. Therefore, despite achieving significant profits, the company has opted to downsize its workforce as AI transforms its operations.

Ongoing Tech Industry Lay-Offs

The trend of tech layoffs continues into May, with Cognizant reported to be reducing over 15,000 jobs as part of its restructuring efforts. Similarly, Meta has confirmed layoffs that could affect nearly 8,000 employees in the US.
