Workplace Surveillance: Cognizant’s ProHance Implementation
The major IT services provider, Cognizant, has sparked considerable debate regarding workplace surveillance following the careful rollout of a new workforce management tool, ProHance, in certain project areas. This technology offers in-depth monitoring of employee activities on company-provided laptops, as it has been introduced to executives for training, fostering a crucial dialogue about data collection and privacy within corporates.
Understanding ProHance
The ProHance system is designed to deliver detailed insights into daily operations. Reports on the initiative indicate that the programme continuously tracks keyboard and mouse activity, diligently logging the exact applications and web pages employees utilise during their working hours. The application employs clear standards: employees are labelled as ‘idle’ after just five minutes of not engaging with the device, and are marked ‘away from system’ if their laptop remains inactive for more than fifteen minutes.
Feature Highlights
ProHance provides minute-by-minute insights into login timings, software in use, and task lengths, mapping individual work behaviours to pinpoint workflow inefficiencies and areas for improvement.
Cognizant’s Position
In an effort to mitigate concerns regarding staff performance monitoring or disciplinary actions, the company has promptly and proactively addressed these perceptions. A representative from Cognizant issued a clear denial, emphasising that the programme is not intended to track, monitor, or evaluate employee contributions. They clarified that the use of productivity measurement tools is a standard practice across the industry, frequently driven by client demands for accountability and efficiency metrics.
Specific Use Cases
The spokesperson further stated that ProHance is implemented solely in specific Business Process Management or Intuitive Operations & Automation projects, mainly at the direct request of clients. It is being utilised to gain a better understanding of client process steps and associated time metrics to evaluate process design shortcomings.
Employee Consent and Safeguards
Additionally, the firm confirmed that these tools are activated only after obtaining employee consent and that the collected data will not influence performance reviews, a measure that the company maintains is firmly established.
