Cognizant Workforce Reduction: Impact on 15,000 Employees

Cognizant is expected to implement significant workforce reductions that may impact over 15,000 employees globally. A report from MoneyControl indicates that the bulk of these job cuts will occur in India. This action follows similar trends seen at Oracle and Amazon, marking it as one of the year’s largest tech layoffs.

Cognizant India Layoffs

The calculations for the potential layoffs at Cognizant have been based on the anticipated costs for severance payments. In its quarterly earnings announcement on April 29, Cognizant revealed it expects to allocate between $230 million and $320 million for severance expenses, which cover compensation packages and benefits for affected employees.

Severance Pay Estimates

The average annual salary for employees in India is estimated to be around Rs 15 lakh. Should the laid-off employees receive severance amounting to approximately six months of salary, each individual might expect compensation of roughly Rs 7.5 lakh. This information comes from the report detailing the layoffs.

Budget for Layoffs Under “Project Leap”

Cognizant appears to have set aside substantial severance pay funds under the initiative known as “Project Leap.” This budget is projected to accommodate layoffs affecting around 12,000 to 13,000 employees specifically in India.

Industry Insights on Staffing Trends

Industry leaders have noted a shift away from traditional staffing models, which heavily rely on entry-level personnel. One executive remarked that clients are increasingly reluctant to finance the training of large groups of new hires.

CEO’s Remarks on Company Restructuring

Cognizant’s CEO Ravi Kumar S has indicated that there will be a global restructuring within the company. He mentioned during the earnings call that Cognizant is moving towards a more compact organisational structure, integrating both digital and human labour.
